The Burton S.I. Club was founded in 1941, and one of its founder members was Miss Gladys Rowland, a local primary Headteacher, who became President 1943-4. When she died, aged 91, she left a sum of money to the Club who decided to use the donation to support girls, from local schools, starting University to specialise in Mathematics, Scientific, Business and Engineering subjects. The first awards were made in 1989, and to date over 130 students have benefitted. Funding this project continues through donations and fund raising events.
