{"id":1014,"date":"2019-03-24T17:16:32","date_gmt":"2019-03-24T16:16:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/buxton-and-district\/?p=1014"},"modified":"2021-04-24T16:06:53","modified_gmt":"2021-04-24T15:06:53","slug":"newsletter-spring-summer-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/buxton-and-district\/2019\/03\/24\/newsletter-spring-summer-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWSLETTER &#8211; SPRING\/SUMMER 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>March Dinner Meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/buxton-and-district\/files\/2019\/03\/caverescue2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1015 alignleft\" src=\"\/buxton-and-district\/files\/2019\/03\/caverescue2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/buxton-and-district\/files\/2019\/03\/caverescue2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/buxton-and-district\/files\/2019\/03\/caverescue2.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>President Anne Needham introduced local man, Bill Whitehouse MBE, Vice Chairman of the British Cave Rescue Council.<\/p>\n<p>He gave a fascinating presentation about the dramatic rescue of the junior football team trapped in Tham Luang Cave,Thailand last summer.<\/p>\n<p>The boys had been taken on a walk into the cave by their young coach, and unexpectedly they were trapped by rising water in a cave under the &#8220;Sleeping Lady &#8221; mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Following bureaucratic setbacks with the military, Thai authorities agreed that the British team of experts should be allowed to help.\u00a0 Four Thai &#8220;SEALS&#8221; had attempted a rescue and failed.<\/p>\n<p>The intervention by the King of Thailand then ensured the UK&#8217;s team were allowed access. They were given just a few hours to mastermind a plan. Two Australian cave divers joined their team. One was an anaesthetist, the other a vet.<\/p>\n<p>The boys were successfully evacuated after each one was sedated and &#8221; packaged &#8221; before being carried through flooded passages to safety. The first four were brought to the surface, but no-one knew who they were. The remaining boys had their name written on the backs of their hands. Ultimately all the boys, their coach and the four Thai SEALS were all brought to safety but, tragically, one of the rescuers died in the attempt.<\/p>\n<p>Bill was thanked by President Elect, Jo Holdway.<\/p>\n<p>SOROPTIMISTS SUPPORT FAIRTRADE &#8211; and were very pleased to receive donations of sanitary wear in response to our appeal.<\/p>\n<p>It was a pleasure to meet so many members of the public and give an insight into the work Soroptimists do on a local, national and international level.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>May Dinner Meeting &#8211;
