distance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><strong>March Zoom Meeting<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We were treated to a slideshow and talk by Elaine and Debbie on their trip to Nepal.\u00a0 They had joined an organised trip to Everest Base Camp and the description of their outward journey, overnight stays and trek with all the sights and sounds was really fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>Their overriding motivation had been to support Breast Cancer research and they had raised the amazing amount of \u00a323.700.\u00a0 They also managed to visit an education centre which had been supported by a Soroptimist Federation project, and they saw the impressive vocational training that the young women were receiving.<\/p>\n<p>Soroptimists were welcomed from other Clubs and everyone thanked Debbie everyone thanked outgoing Joint Presidents Sue and Jo, and welcomed Deborah as our new Club President.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, Jo presented Deborah with her chain of office and Jo received her (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Climate Pathfinders<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We were joined for our June zoom meeting by four members of Climate Pathfinders, High Peak and Derbyshire Dales.\u00a0 \u00a0This is a new group formed to find an alternative way of promoting and supporting environmental matters, because members are under 18 with as yet no vote.\u00a0 \u00a0We were given a talk and presentation on the group&#8217;s aims and objectives, and their passion for the cause shone through.<\/p>\n<p>The group&#8217;s priorities are :\u00a0 Take Local Action\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Tell Decision Makers\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Spread the Word.<\/p>\n<p>Soroptimists offered to help and support wherever we could.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/buxton-and-district\/files\/2021\/03\/narra-tree-clipart-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4584\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/buxton-and-district\/files\/2021\/03\/narra-tree-clipart-3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Members were fascinated at the <strong><em>July Zoom business meeting<\/em><\/strong> to find out about the work of Transition Buxton.\u00a0 Robin Edwards, one of their five Directors gave a slide show and talked about their aims and achievements.\u00a0 The group runs monthly repair cafes at the Buxton Methodist church, and arranges for recycling bins (for hard to recycle items such as crisp packets) to be placed in Buxton supermarkets.\u00a0 Their theme of resilience very much echoes the work of the Soroptimists themselves.\u00a0 Sadly, much of this work halted during the lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>The particular project which Robin illustrated is the Community Orchard. Sites across Buxton have been successfully used to create the orchard, with fruits such as pears, apples, plums and gages, available for anyone to eat and enjoy.\u00a0 Eighty trees in total are now thriving across the town.
