It was in 2024 that our club, along with others in Midland Chase Region, made our Rosie\u2019s Plaques.<\/p>\n
So what are Rosie\u2019s Plaques?<\/p>\n
They began as a guerrilla art project staged by women of The Common Lot in Norwich. They realised that the majority of Blue Plaques in the country recognise men, whilst women, who have also done things for the good of our communities and our country, were largely forgotten. In 2019 just 14% of blue plaques celebrated the achievements of women.<\/p>\n
The project began in Norwich in May 2019 when they made alternative blue plaques, eight of them. Under cover of darkness, dressed as Rosie the Riveter, the female icon associated with female defence workers during World War 2, the members of The Common Lot erected the alternative blue plaques on significant buildings in the city of Norwich. \u00a0It has since become a national movement, featured on local and national TV. Rosie\u2019s Plaques on Tour was born when people from all over the country started to get in touch to ask if plaques could be made for women from their town or city.<\/p>\n
They brought their tour bus to us at an SI Midland Chase Region meeting where we had great fun making our plaques.<\/p>\n
