Soroptimists are marking World Food Day \u2013 Monday 16<\/span>th<\/span> October \u2013 by collecting items of food to donate to the Cannock Food Bank, collecting at their September and October meetings. \u00a0The local food bank has recently put out an urgent plea for more food as their stocks are running very low.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soroptimists are pleased to be able to support this project \u2013 many of us are lucky enough to never have to worry about where the next meal comes from, though we know this is not the case for everyone. \u00a0Enabling a mother to feed her children, [and herself], means that they are being helped towards a safer and healthier life.<\/span><\/p>\n

The focus of the action and work undertaken by Soroptimists is to improve the lives of women and girls: making sure they are not hungry is part of that work.<\/span><\/p>\n

All food donated is either tinned or in packets and they welcome such items as: milk -UHT or powdered; sugar; soup; pasta sauces; tinned vegetables; tea bags; instant coffee; tinned meat or fish; tinned fruit; tinned rice pudding; jam; biscuits or snack bars. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Figures show that 1 in 5 people in the UK live below the poverty line; foodbanks provide essential help to these people and families. Cannock & District foodbank works using a voucher referral system and recipients then receive a pack containing three days worth of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food.
