{"id":4525,"date":"2020-07-23T10:46:06","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T09:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/cannock-and-district\/?p=4525"},"modified":"2020-07-23T10:46:06","modified_gmt":"2020-07-23T09:46:06","slug":"zoom-meeting-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/cannock-and-district\/2020\/07\/23\/zoom-meeting-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Zoom Meeting Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cannock Soroptimists held an exciting meeting via zoom when they had a number of firsts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A presentation given by an 11 year old \u2013 Katie, daughter of club member Emma Hodges<\/li>\n<li>Their biggest zoom audience yet \u2013 26, of which 11 were guests!<\/li>\n<li>One of Soroptimists\u2019 Federation officers joined them \u2013 Naina Shah of SI Chennai, who leads on all environmental issues.<\/li>\n<li>Everyone utilized the \u2018chat\u2019 facility on zoom brilliantly!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Katie Hodges started \u2018Children Against Climate Change\u2019 in November 2019 and held an event in Rugeley to try and get more people, in particular schools, to take these challenges seriously.\u00a0 She was angry and upset that climate change wasn\u2019t a priority.\u00a0 Cannock Soroptimists had planned to invite Katie to one of their meetings to show her presentation \u2013 then came lockdown!\u00a0 So instead, Katie gave her presentation virtually.<\/p>\n<p>Members and guests alike were enthused by the presentation and motivated by Katie&#8217;s message &#8216;What will you do?&#8217; with everyone answering with positive actions ranging from having a meat and fish free day every week \u2013 sharing recipes and enjoying the same meal on-line being a favourite! \u2013 to avoiding buying anything with a black food tray [as these cannot be recycled]; through to looking to change to a green energy provider, getting involved with litter picks and ensuring our gardens can host wildlife. Everyone had an Eco-Pledge sheet to show what they already do and what they pledge to do.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the actions we can take as individuals or as a group, there are larger issues to be addressed. There was shocking information within Katie\u2019s presentation, such as the fact that every hour, forest the size of 300 football pitches is destroyed for palm oil plantations; or that one third of all food produced is wasted!\u00a0 That makes no sense when so many in the world go hungry.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the evening we were treated to a second power point presentation which Katie had put together especially for this meeting. It was set to the song \u2018What a Wonderful World\u2019 and showed the incredible things that have happened during the Covid-19 pandemic as the earth began to heal because of less pollution and people having restrictions in their lives.\u00a0 A powerful slide had on it pictures of birds and animals with the words \u201cIt\u2019s as if our wildlife has come out of its own lockdown\u201d \u2013 very emotive!<\/p>\n<p>Katie began the evening with the words \u201cI hope you care about our planet as much as I do and that this helps you think about what more you can do\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She ended it with \u201cThe world still needs us!
