Two new blue plaques are to be unveiled in Cannock Town Centre \u2013 they are \u2018alternative Blue Plaques\u2019, otherwise known as \u2018Rosie\u2019s Plaques\u2019.<\/p>\n

But what are Rosie\u2019s Plaques? They began as a guerrilla art project staged by women of The Common Lot in Norwich. They realised that the majority of Blue Plaques in the country recognise men, whilst women, who have also done things for the good of our communities and our country, were largely forgotten. In 2019 just 14% of blue plaques celebrated the achievements of women.<\/p>\n

Soroptimist clubs of Midland Chase Region decided to get involved and last year Cannock club, made their Rosie\u2019s Plaques.<\/p>\n

One of them recognises a woman without whom there would be no hospital in Cannock: Ethell Powell. Whilst she received an MBE in recognition of her work and is recognised within the hospital itself, it seemed appropriate to bring her name and her work to the attention of all who visit Cannock Town Centre.<\/p>\n

The other plaque recognises all women who have been Soroptimists in Cannock & District over the last 70 years; they have all worked to educate, enable and empower women.<\/p>\n

The official unveiling will take place on Sunday 14th<\/sup> September at 11.30am at the Town Centre Clock in Cannock. Several dignitaries will be attending including Deputy Lieutenant of Staffordshire Charles Hawley.<\/p>\n

Cannock Soroptimists welcome anyone who would like to join them at that occasion and to enjoy refreshments afterwards in St Luke\u2019s Church Centre.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
