SI Canterbury members in Cardiff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The 83rd Conference of Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland in Cardiff, provided inspiring speakers, lively entertainment and friendship from across the federation for\u00a01,500 Soroptimists including nine members of SI Canterbury.<\/p>\n

The conference, themed ‘Step Up, Lead the Way’,\u00a0delivered\u00a0keynote speakers Michael Kaufman (@WhiteRibbon_UK) and Mandy Hickson, (@MandyHickson).<\/p>\n

In addition\u00a0we were treated to\u00a0inspiring talks, from Rebecca Lewin, Director of Logistics & Procurement at Plan International and Dame Katherine Grainger, one of Britain’s most decorated female Olympians. Discussion sessions and club presentations provided further inspiration and, if that’s not enough, we were\u00a0entertained by Aaron Pryce-Lewis, the Bristol Military Wives Choir and the Phil Dando Band and Singers at the opening and closing ceremonies.<\/p>\n

Michael Kaufman, co-founder of the White Ribbon Campaign, the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women, gave a stimulating\u00a0 presentation, \u201cIn Our Lifetimes \u2013 Engaging Men for Gender Equality and Ending Men\u2019s Violence\u201d. He described how men\u2019s silence has\u00a0been a\u00a0huge problem in gender equality campaign saying that despite\u00a0progress\u00a0 8000 years of male dominance means it is taking time to make the transformational changes needed for the future.<\/p>\n

Michael was\u00a0co-founder of the White Ribbon Campaign in 1991 realising that we are bombarded from birth with ideas of what defines gender. He described how,\u00a0at the birth of his son, the midwife adopted a low tone to her voice\u00a0saying, \u201cwhat a strong little fellow”. And so begins gender expectation behaviour.<\/p>\n

His presentation included images of male domination in advertising and he said \u201cWe must engage men to end gender inequality and violence against women”,\u00a0“this is a problem for the\u00a0world\u2019s population not just a problem for half of us\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n

Michael told us he believed men\u2019s violence is often a combination of dominance and the insecurity of not being able to live up to expectations but \u201cfeminism is the greatest gift men\u00a0will ever have \u2013 freeing them to be the men they want to be \u2013 redefining the world of equality and justice\u201d. Workplaces must be equal, respectful and non-violent.\u00a0He\u00a0encouraged men \u00a0to tweet\u00a0#CountMeIn and follow men-care.org<\/a> to learn how to transform their lives and\u00a0develop empathy.<\/p>\n

Mandy Hickson is one of the first female pilots flying frontline Tornado jets for the Royal Air Force. She entitled her presentation,\u00a0\u2018Dream it, Believe it, Do it\u2019 and\u00a0inspired us with tales from her 17 year career as a fast jet pilot whose office was a Tornado GR4.<\/p>\n

Throughout, we were provided with insights into how she attained her goals. Mandy\u2019s story was not all happy-ever-afters but a series of obstacles to be climbed. Visualising goals and being task-oriented enabled her to achieve those. She took chances whilst not being afraid of failure since\u00a0this can be surmounted through\u00a0a positive mind-set, creative thinking\u00a0and being part of a strong team.<\/p>\n

Mandy littered her talk with humour and\u00a0 anecdotes: favourites of which were her receiving the nickname \u2018Big Bird\u2019 (Sesame Street) instead of her favoured \u2018Ice Maiden\u2019, and being caught on camera waving to a Lake District fell-walker from her jet.<\/p>\n

Mandy\u2019s life has come full circle, and she\u2019s now taking air-cadets up on flights. Emily could be the next Mandy, but unlike Mandy her self-belief was low and she was terrified of failure. Whether our goals are big, like Mandy\/Emily\u2019s, or small,\u00a0we should stop the doubt, grab the goal, and build from\u00a0 failure.<\/p>\n
