Sunday 24th February 2019 – SI President Jen reports – Presidents of SI Cardiff and District & SI Pontypridd combined charity lunch in aid of the Forget me not chorus.
This was a wonderful afternoon celebrating formidable ladies. We were joined by members from lots of other clubs, and we were honoured to have the Regional President Eleanor Parker join us.
A bucks fizz on arrival and then we were entertained by Cardiff and District Rock Choir ; a UK wide community choir which was started by Caroline Redman Lusher in 2005 for those who love to sing but couldn’t read music and had no confidence to audition . Members of this choir also sing as buddies for the Forget me not chorus which was set up by Kate Woolveridge to help those with dementia.
A stunning 3 course lunch was professionally served finishing with coffee and mints and then the piѐce de résistance : “Dames of the Desert” which was an introduction to the Middle East & Victoria’s Women delivered by our very first Linked member Alison Shan Price MBE who lives in Kuwait and who founded the One World Actors Centre. Using hats as props she told us about 4 ladies ; Gertrude Bell CBE , Violet Dickson DBE , Doreen Ingrams and Freya Stark who, between the first and second world wars had amazing lives and made their mark in the Middle East in spite of male domination.
Thanks to all that made the afternoon the success that it was .
Jen SI Cardiff and District President.
