{"id":4525,"date":"2020-05-03T17:19:22","date_gmt":"2020-05-03T16:19:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/chester\/?p=4525"},"modified":"2020-05-03T17:29:45","modified_gmt":"2020-05-03T16:29:45","slug":"raise-awareness-of-the-signs-of-modern-day-slavery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/chester\/2020\/05\/03\/raise-awareness-of-the-signs-of-modern-day-slavery\/","title":{"rendered":"Can you recognise the signs of Modern Day Slavery?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SI Chester raises awareness of Modern Day Slavery (MDS) and Human Trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>We have given talks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/u3asites.org.uk\/chester\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chester U3A<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.chester.ac.uk\/departments\/health-and-social-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Chester Healthcare Students<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewi.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Several local WI groups<\/a><\/li>\n<li>University Diversity &amp; Inclusion Day<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.storyhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Storyhouse<\/a> Women&#8217;s Weekend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ali Ussery (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.havenoflight.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Haven of Light<\/a>) gave a talk at a Club Dinner to members from our club and other clubs in the region.<\/p>\n<p>We have lobbied the Police &amp; Crime Commissioner about the lack of funding for the Cheshire Anti-Slavery Network, and we are hopeful that meetings will recommence in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>It is known that hotels can be used to provide a venue for sex slaves. We are checking the MDS Statements Re: Ethical Supply Chains on the websites of Chester Hotels.<\/p>\n<p>Our work comes under the umbrella of <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/?menu=1300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>5 \u2013 Gender Equality. This seeks to end all forms of discrimination against women and to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls, as well as to eliminate all harmful practices, such as early and forced child marriage and FGM. There are several other relevant clauses under Goal 5.<\/p>\n<p>16 \u2013 Peace and Justice.
