Mary’s Meals

Crosby’s Soroptimists – working for food security.

Mary’s Meals is a charity that provides daily meals to chronically hungry children in their local school, in several developing countries. In this way the hungry child is encouraged to attend school and, through education, gain a better future for herself and her community.

SI Crosby members support, in particular, the Mary’s Meals Backpack Project – which reinforces this work.

Most of the children who benefit from Mary’s Meals Backpack Project have suffered war, poverty, famine, or natural disaster. Very often families cannot afford to buy basic things like pencils and copy books, or even suitable clothes for their children to wear to school – so their children miss out on school and an education.

A simple backpack with educational materials can be a lifeline to these children, as studies show that an education is the best way a chronically poor child can escape poverty in later life.

Backpack-filling sessions are fun, as well as being practical service projects. Under Covid-19 restrictions members still filled their own packs and organised delivery to the charity’s HQ.

The Club has been supporting Mary’s Meals for a number of years and has filled around 500 bags and donated almost £5,000 cash.
