{"id":6416,"date":"2023-06-22T22:08:02","date_gmt":"2023-06-22T21:08:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/?page_id=6416"},"modified":"2026-04-14T23:15:49","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T22:15:49","slug":"toilet-twinning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/our-projects\/toilet-twinning\/","title":{"rendered":"Toilet Twinning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4>A clean toilet, fresh water, soap and privacy \u2026 things that we take for granted.<\/h4>\n<p>Access to sanitation facilities has been recognised as a human right by the United Nations since 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Yet millions of people have no access to these facilities \u2013 their \u2018toilet\u2019 is out in the bush.<\/p>\n<p>Women are therefore at risk from sexual assault, especially at night. They can\u2019t manage their menstrual hygiene. Girls\u2019 education suffers because of a lack of toilets where they can deal with their period. Children die because their drinking water is contaminated by human waste.<\/p>\n<p>For several years, therefore, Crosby\u2019s Soroptimists have supported the charity <a href=\"https:\/\/toilettwinning.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toilet Twinning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The roll call of &#8216;twins&#8217; &#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The internal toilets at <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/our-projects\/lunt-meadows\/\">Lunt Meadows<\/a> Learning Centre with a latrine in the Democratic Republic of Congo<\/li>\n<li>The toilet at former StoryHouse Caf\u00e9, Crosby, with a latrine in the small village of Yalo, near the town of Bouna in north-eastern Ivory Coast<\/li>\n<li>The ladies\u2019 loo at West Lancashire Golf Club, with a school block in Tanzania. This was a joint project with Crosby&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/about-our-club\/friendship-links\/\">Friendship Link<\/a> Club SI Jesi in Italy &#8211; and involved imaginative <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/2022\/08\/09\/sunshine-coffee-and-a-potty\/\">fundraising<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li>At <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/our-projects\/lunt-meadows\/\">Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve<\/a> , the external compost toilet with a girls&#8217; toilet at a school in Malawi<\/li>\n<li>Our original &#8216;twin&#8217; &#8211; the ladies&#8217; loo at the <a href=\"https:\/\/plazacinema.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plaza Cinema<\/a>, Crosby with a latrine in Chatumbura Village, Malawi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator
