{"id":5195,"date":"2021-03-08T17:44:15","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T16:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/?p=5195"},"modified":"2021-03-08T17:44:15","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T16:44:15","slug":"soroptimists-celebrate-women-internationally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/2021\/03\/08\/soroptimists-celebrate-women-internationally\/","title":{"rendered":"Soroptimists Celebrate Women, Internationally"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Crosby\u2019s Soroptimists marked International Women\u2019s Day 2021 with a world-wide link-up.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2021\/03\/International-Womens-Day-event-2021.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5197\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2021\/03\/International-Womens-Day-event-2021-300x188.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2021\/03\/International-Womens-Day-event-2021-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2021\/03\/International-Womens-Day-event-2021.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>Soroptimists from SI Crosby\u2019s \u2018friendship clubs\u2019 joined together &#8216;virtually&#8217; for a morning celebrating women\u2019s achievements.<\/p>\n<p>A warm welcome was extended to guests, including members from SI Falkenberg (Sweden) and SI Joondalup (Australia).<\/p>\n<p>Crosby members Stephanie, Elspeth and Jane spoke of their careers. They work \u2013 and worked \u2013 in environments \u2018dominated\u2019 by men. Trailblazers they have been, standing up for themselves and for other women in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Christine from SI Keighley (Yorkshire) told of her former MP Ann Cryer. Ann investigated the grooming and sexual exploitation of young girls in her community. She stood up for the mothers who were not being listened to. Despite personal safety issues she persisted. Eventually legal protection and other measures were put in place.<\/p>\n<p>Denise from SI Jesi (Italy) chose to tell the story of Maria Montessori, born only a few kilometres from the town. She is, of course, famed for her contribution to education. However, Maria\u2019s earlier struggle to qualify as a physician at the end of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century \u2013 and then her personal challenges \u2013 influenced her work with children.<\/p>\n<p>Soroptimists \u2018choose to challenge\u2019 inequality and gender bias. This International Women&#8217;s Day event was a fitting celebration of women&#8217;s potential and power.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crosby\u2019s Soroptimists marked International Women\u2019s Day 2021 with a world-wide link-up.
