We\u2019d hoped to go in April 2020 but Covid put paid to that.<\/p>\n<p>An early start, long security delays at Manchester, a flight and a bus eventually saw us arrive in Tui, Galicia, on the Spanish\/Portuguese border. That\u2019s some 117km from Santiago de Compostela.<\/p>\n<p>We started walking the following morning after a breakfast of too many pastries and fabulous freshly squeezed orange juice.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1653752599506-f0a75b7c-029f-3&#8243; include=&#8221;5921,5923,5922&#8243;][vc_column_text]The \u2018way\u2019 is generally well marked. This route is very popular so we weren\u2019t always alone. All sorts of people from all over the world do the Camino. We were particularly taken with a Venezuelan mother and daughter and a Danish family \u2013 parents and two young boys who were having a great time. I\u2019m not so sure about the wisdom of the Czech couple pushing their 6-month-old in a pushchair. Long days to be strapped in!<\/p>\n<p>Reasons for doing it range from the religious to \u2018because it\u2019s there\u2019. Whatever the motivation, though, a spirit of some kind stays with you.[\/vc_column_text][vc_media_grid grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1653752599511-ba99c763-b5f6-2&#8243; include=&#8221;5927,5932,5936&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Blisters were battled and, Soroptimists to the core, treatment given to others. We administered \u2018Compeed\u2019 and donated walking poles to those who were really struggling. Ankles can easily turn on the dappled-light woodland paths strewn with tree roots. They\u2019re a trip hazard if ever there was one.<\/p>\n<p>Although it was lush and pretty, the rolling countryside sometimes made a ten-mile walk seem a long one. We had a couple of longer tiring days when the only appropriate medication was gin and tonic once we reached our destination.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1653752599517-e996c8fe-fe20-5&#8243; include=&#8221;5924,5926,5925&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Days got into a rhythm pretty quickly \u2013 basically we\u2019d walk until we got to the next night\u2019s stop. There were breaks for drinks, food, visits to those churches open along the way and chats to locals kind enough to stop and talk. To prove that we had walked the last 100k we had to collect stamps (\u2018sellos\u2019) as we travelled.<\/p>\n<p>Walking north, \u00a0we passed through Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padron (of the peppers!) The six days went by and on the seventh we finally saw the spires of Santiago in the distance.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1653752599523-b21fba22-8775-1&#8243; include=&#8221;5928,5929,5938&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Arriving in the Plaza de Obradoiro is just stunning \u2013 the tall, ornate fa\u00e7ade of the newly restored and cleaned cathedral shines golden. Inside people gather for the pilgrim Mass. Traditionally prayers are said to St James for taking care of pilgrims on their journey. Sadly, we didn\u2019t see the Botafumiero lit and swung \u2013 the \u00a0huge 58kg incense burner. Will have to return !!<\/p>\n<p>We proudly received our \u2018compostelas\u2019 \u2013 the certificate of our completed pilgrimage.
