{"id":5958,"date":"2022-06-09T23:30:20","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T22:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/?p=5958"},"modified":"2022-06-09T23:42:41","modified_gmt":"2022-06-09T22:42:41","slug":"educate-empower-enable-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/2022\/06\/09\/educate-empower-enable-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Educate, Empower, Enable &#8211; in Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Crosby Soroptimists recently invited speakers from two local organisations to visit the Club.<\/h5>\n<p>Both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fun4kidz.org.uk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fun4Kidz<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peterhouseschool.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peterhouse School<\/a> received donations from the Soroptimists\u2019 2021-22 fundraising efforts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Debbie-Stephens-r-Terry-Francis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5960\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Debbie-Stephens-r-Terry-Francis-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Debbie-Stephens-r-Terry-Francis-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Debbie-Stephens-r-Terry-Francis.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Debbie-Stephens-r-Terry-Francis-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Debbie Stephens is Executive Officer of Fun4Kidz. This charity was originally set up in Netherton to provide out-of-school clubs for local children.<\/p>\n<p>From the outset Fun4Kidz has worked within the community and alongside families to develop services that meet specific needs. Its welcoming and listening ethos has seen the charity grow. Fun4Kidz now provides activities for over 850 children per week.<\/p>\n<p>The charity encourages local people to voice their wishes, plan, organise and carry out their projects. The L30 Community Centre is, therefore, an activity hub and resource for residents of all ages.<\/p>\n<p>Lesley Fleming is Autism Lead Practitioner at Peterhouse School, Southport. This is a non-maintained specialist school for children and young people aged 5 to 19 who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition.<a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Lesley-Fleming.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5961\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Lesley-Fleming-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Lesley-Fleming-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Lesley-Fleming.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/files\/2022\/06\/President-Margaret-with-speaker-Lesley-Fleming-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The school works with the children as individuals, looking for their strengths and skills. Pupils\u2019 expectations are supported, and their self-esteem can grow. Lesley has a fund of stories about the children&#8217;s achievements.<\/p>\n<p>Partnership with the families is key to the school\u2019s approach. Autism is seen not as a disability but definitely as an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>It was clear that both speakers are passionate about their organisations. Their work is people-centred \u2013 personal \u2013 life-changing.
