{"id":7181,"date":"2024-11-05T23:54:55","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T22:54:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/?p=7181"},"modified":"2024-11-06T00:05:21","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T23:05:21","slug":"tartan-tale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/2024\/11\/05\/tartan-tale\/","title":{"rendered":"Tartan Tale"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h5>Ten Soroptimists from Crosby attended the Federation Conference in Edinburgh.<\/h5>\n<p>This, the 90th annual conference of Soroptimist International (Great Britain &amp; Ireland), was held in the elegant surroundings of the Assembly Rooms &#8211; chandeliers and all.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/edinburgh2024\/programme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conference programme<\/a>\u00a0packed in sessions encompassing information, updates and challenges \u2013 all under the banner of \u2018Educate \u2013 Empower \u2013 Enable\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/edinburgh2024\/members-blogs-from-conference\/keynote-speaker-baroness-floella-benjamin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Key speaker<\/a> on the theme of empowerment was Floella Benjamin \u2013 Baroness Benjamin of Beckenham. In a stunning hour-long presentation she spoke about coming to UK at the age of 8, about discrimination and bullying because of the colour of her skin, and of her struggles to get to where she is today.<\/p>\n<p>Respected as a champion of children, Baroness Floella encourages girls to be resilient, to speak out and to be true to themselves. There was a standing ovation for this consummate performance, delivered with such passion.[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=&#8221;white&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1730847821015-e2a24634-8303-3&#8243; include=&#8221;7183,7186,7203,7194,7195,7189,7209,7185&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Crosby Soroptimists caught up with many friends in other clubs. Meanwhile the poster exhibition, which showcased projects from all round the Federation, provided excellent opportunities to strike up conversations with other delegates. SI Crosby\u2019s promotion was the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/2024\/09\/26\/heart-health-showcase\/\">\u2018heart health\u2019 event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Red roses were out in force at the Change of Insignia session. Crosby member Sandy Taylor took over the reins of SI South Lancashire Region \u2013 for the second time.<\/p>\n<p>Crosby Club President Sharon Ryan said: \u201cConferences are a great opportunity to listen and learn. Our members worked hard but \u2018played hard\u2019, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe enjoyed dining out together and celebrating Sandy\u2019s new role. We talked incessantly and laughed so much.
