{"id":7252,"date":"2024-11-26T18:45:42","date_gmt":"2024-11-26T17:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/?p=7252"},"modified":"2024-11-26T18:45:42","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T17:45:42","slug":"women-against-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/2024\/11\/26\/women-against-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Women Against Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h5>Crosby\u2019s Soroptimists have bought another toilet and are &#8216;flushed&#8217; with success !<\/h5>\n<p>Club members presented a commemorative plaque to Matt, the manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/storyhouse.community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StoryHouse Caf\u00e9<\/a> in Crosby at their monthly Orange Caf\u00e9 session.<\/p>\n<p>The new \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/toilettwinning.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">twin<\/a>\u2019 for StoryHouse is in the small village of Yalo, near the town of Bouna in north-eastern Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n<p>Toilet twinning is one of the club\u2019s long-term <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/crosby\/our-projects\/toilet-twinning\/\">projects<\/a>. Good sanitation is essential for personal, public and environmental health. The provision of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/toilet-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">safe toilets<\/a> is one of the targets of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> \u2013 \u2018Ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all\u2019.[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=&#8221;white&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1732642879949-5790b387-bb09-5&#8243; include=&#8221;7256,7254,7255,7253&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Crosby event coincided with Day 1 of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/get-involved\/16-days-of-activism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence<\/a>\u2019. This campaign, co-ordinated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNWomen<\/a>, starts on 25th November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and ends on 10th December (Human Rights Day). It highlights that violence against women is the most pervasive breach of human rights worldwide. Every 10 minutes, partners and family members killed a woman or girl intentionally in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Soroptimist Sandy Taylor said. \u201cFor women in many parts of the world a proper toilet fosters dignity \u2013 dealing with menstruation, for example. Crucially, it fosters safety. Women and girls face risks of sexual violence when they have to walk long distances to sanitation facilities, especially at night. A toilet at home reduces those risks.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=&#8221;white&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1732642879956-8d094d19-2274-7&#8243; include=&#8221;7258,7257,7260,7259&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Soroptimists took their message down to Crosby beach. Club member Vesna Levi said: \u201cWe are women against violence, so we \u2018signed up\u2019 an Iron Man as an activist.
