President’s Message

As we begin our 2019/20 year I am reminded of the story of the child and the starfish.

One day, following a storm, thousands of starfish were washed up on to the beach. A small boy was walking along the beach picking up the starfish and throwing them back into the sea. When asked what he was doing, he replied that he was saving the starfish. He was told “You do realise there are thousands of stranded starfish along the beach and only one of you. You’re not going to make much of a difference!”  The boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it back into the sea saying, “Well, I made a difference to that one.’’

Last year we provided 600 pencils, 5 sewing machines and £1800 to a school in Pakistan, potentially making a difference to 500+ children and their families. We helped provide sanitary products to Red Box Project (locally) and to Kumi (Uganda), making a difference to each girl able to access them and consequently attend school.

Sometimes we look at the task and think it is so big we cannot possibly make a difference, but we can, and if we work together we can make a difference for many people.

How many ‘starfish’ can we ‘throw back in the sea’ this year?

I have chosen Hope Through Education (Karachi) as one of our charities for this year, along with Al Umeed, a project in Karachi for children with Cerebral Palsy. I hope we can also continue to support Food for Thought, Red Box, Family Help and other local charities in making a difference to the lives of women and children in the UK and abroad.
