Tuesday January 24th – Speaker Meeting.
Jeannie Cooper from the Fieldwork Division of the Abertay historical Society gave an interesting talk at our recent meeting. She outlined the history of the arch from the amazing wooden Triumphal Arch designed, erected and painted in only 7 days to mark Queen Victoria’s landing from the Royal yacht in the City on 11th September 1844 to the controversial permanent sandstone structure erected by public subscription in 1850.
The Royal Arch was demolished in 1964 during the construction of the Tay Road Bridge. She also showed a picture of cardboard reconstruction erected and demolished in May 2016.
Jeannie’s talk triggered memories of going through the arch to the swimming pool while members were children.
