The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror<\/em> meaning sister, and optima<\/em> meaning best and\u00a0is interpreted as \u2018the best for women\u2019. From the founding of the first Soroptimist club in Oakland, California, in 1921, through to the present day where over 3000 Clubs are flourishing throughout the world, Soroptimists have continued to strive to achieve \u2018the best for women\u2019 in every sphere of their lives.<\/p>\n

Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) together with Soroptimists from across the world join together to celebrate 100 years of Soroptimist International. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement with a network of around 72,000 club members in 121 countries. Advocating for human rights and gender equality, at the heart of Soroptimist International\u2019s advocacy is its work across eight UN Centres, where our UN representatives ensure that the voices of women and girls are heard. Our membership work on grassroots projects that help women and girls achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in communities worldwide. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our Vision <\/strong>is that women and girls will achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide and our Mission <\/strong>is to\u00a0transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities.<\/p>\n

As a Soroptimist you can enjoy yourself and work on projects that help improve the lives of women and girls locally, nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n
