Welcome to SI Edinburgh’s<\/strong> news of our activities.<\/p>\n

As members of Soroptimist International our work is focused on supporting women and girls in any way we can from local to international.\u00a0 At SI Edinburgh we also experience the warmth of international friendship and enjoy social activities.<\/p>\n

Summer Outing 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n

SI Edinburgh members enjoyed their Summer outing to Dalkeith Palace and Park.\u00a0It was a lovely sunny day. We had a tour of Dalkeith Palace which was fascinating.<\/div>\n
Then we had Lunch sitting outside the kitchen at the Restoration Yard.<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amsterdam Adventure 10-14th April 2025 for Girl Guides<\/strong><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

<\/u>\u00a0With the support of SI Edinburgh, <\/u>29 members of 23rd and 134th City of Edinburgh Guides had great fun recently on their Amsterdam Adventure. Here is a summary of the event.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Thurs: travelled by private coach to Hull and overnight ferry to Rotterdam. Girls were in 4 berth cabins. We had an excellent all you can eat buffet for dinner and afterwards explored the ship and watched the sunset from the deck.\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Fri: Up early and had a good breakfast followed by prompt disembarkation. We then had a 90 minute coach transfer to Amsterdam. On arrival in Amsterdam there was a short walk followed by a few stops on the tram to the hostel. After depositing our luggage we set off for the Verzets Resistance Museum. This was a World War 2 museum with a special section about the experience of children in the Netherlands during WW2. The girls chose to visit here as we had not been able to get tickets for Anne Frank’s house. In the evening we did a canal cruise.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Sat: The main event. We joined up with over 600 Girlguiding Scotland members to take part in the wide game.\u00a0 Basically this was a treasure hunt around the city using a phone app called Goosechase. Points were earned for visiting various locations around the city. There were also challenges to complete. For example at the Van Gogh museum the girls were given paper and crayons and had to reproduce a Van Gogh masterpiece. Points were also gained for using different forms of transport – bus, tram, metro. I was sorry we didn’t manage the short ferry ride. It was just a game but we were very pleased to come 11th out of 46 teams. It is amazing how competitive 10 year old girls can be. There was hardly any time to stop for lunch.\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Sun: The girls wanted to shop. Personally I didn’t see the point in spending 45 minutes in Amsterdam Primark but we are a girl led organisation……We then headed back to Rotterdam and the overnight ferry.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Mon: arrived back in Edinburgh.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

This was a great experience for the girls and great fun for all of us. We are very grateful for the grant received from Soroptimists. Some of the money is going to be used to purchase a photobook for everyone as a memento of the trip.<\/u><\/p>\n

Soroptimists across Scotland ORANGE THE WORLD!<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

Scottish Soroptimists are taking action and calling for the Elimination of Violence against Women.<\/p>\n

On the 25th of every month Scottish Soroptimists draw attention to the worldwide UN campaign \u201cSay NO – UNiTE to end violence against women and girls by 2030.<\/p>\n

\n

The campaign is known internationally as \u201cOrange the World\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Violence against women and girls, from sexual harassment to abuse and femicide needs to be stopped!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our action, \u201cOrange caf\u00e9s\u201d is simple but conveys a powerful and visible message.<\/p>\n

The \u201cOrange caf\u00e9s\u201d were set up by Edinburgh Soroptimists in the Summer of 2022 and they are spreading!<\/p>\n

On the 25th of each month, Soroptimist groups across Scotland are meeting up in a public caf\u00e9, wearing something orange, to raise awareness and spread the word about this important campaign.<\/p>\n

The action has attracted interest from as far afield as Barbados!<\/p>\n

Women are welcome to join us for a chat, to find out more or to find out about support provided locally for women and girls affected by violence.<\/p>\n

Our Orange Cafe Campaign meets SIGBI Membership Month<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

SI Edinburgh members are delighted that the Orange Cafe idea has spread across all parts of the SIGBI Federation now and is being used as one of the promotions for Soroptimist Membership month.<\/p>\n

Why not join us for a cup of coffee, some good craich and learn more about how we try to change the lives of women and girls for the better.<\/p>\n

Club members are making a splash every month wearing orange, talking to visitors to the Scottish Portrait Gallery as well as socialising and catching up on news. Why not join us to raise awareness of the increasing levels of violence against women and girls?<\/p>\n

Keeping the Orange Campaign Alive!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Club members decided to meet at a cafe every month on 25th day wearing orange to continue to raise awareness of the need to eliminate violence against women and girls. Too many news items are being reported of attacks and killings which must be halted. We encourage members of the public to join us in this campaign.\u00a0 If you want to know more check out the website<\/p>\n

Supporting Women @ Christmas<\/strong><\/p>\n

The annual fun packing gifts for our local women’s hostel. Thanks to local company Joe Cool and generous member donations we have an amazing collection of surprise bags for any of the women and their families who need the shelter this year.<\/p>\n

Once more club members have been supporting one of our regular charities by helping to sort clothes ready to be distributed to children in need.<\/p>\n

And Where’s the Fruit?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A year on from the planting of our orchard trees and little silver birches at Castleview Primary School, Nikki with Lindsey as cameraman, visited Castleview to meet with Kirsten and some of her Primary 5s.\u00a0 Despite the weather failing us, we viewed the progress of the orchard and discussed with Kirsten the other projects the school has in mind – a bee hive and a wild flower meadow below the trees to attract the insects and other wild life.\u00a0 The pupils were very interested to know how soon they would be able to pick apples and without doubt, the trees have flourished on the little derelict plot in which they were planted.\u00a0 Knowing where and how, fruit is produced and what pollinators do seems to be part of this summer\u2019s curriculum.\u00a0 So glad SI Edinburgh has been part of that learning.\u00a0 We shall return in a few years\u2019 time in the hope of seeing some of the results.\u00a0 Picture below shows President Nikki, Programme Action Officer Lindsey and pupils checking on progress.<\/p>\n

Packing Christmas Bags<\/strong><\/p>\n

Members made the most of being able to meet face to face.\u00a0 We had an evening packing Christmas Gift Bags for Cranston St Women’s Hostel full of warm clothing and toiletries.\u00a0 Thanks to President Elect Liz’s sister’s company Joe Cool we were able to add many more gifts this year.<\/p>\n

\n\"\"<\/a>Climate Conference COP26 in Glasgow<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recently, during the meeting of COP26 Anna hosted a Soroptimist and fellow activist from Southern England to enable them to protest outside the Conference in Glasgow.\u00a0 They expressed their appreciation by contributing a donation to the Club, which has been divided between the 3S Fund and for a homeless supporting charity in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

Getting ready for UN Climate Change Conference COP26 in Glasgow<\/strong><\/p>\n

Club members have been knitting and stitching to contribute to a scarf drawing attention to climate change and its impact. This will join with many other contributions\u00a0 from Soroptimists and\u00a0 \u00a0 others\u00a0\u00a0to be handed over to Stitches For Survival<\/span><\/a> to be included in their 1.5mile long scarf to be displayed during COP26.<\/p>\n

Soroptimist International Centenary Year\u00a0 Trees<\/strong><\/p>\n

The club are joining with Soroptimists around the world to plant trees to celebrate the centenary of Soroptimist International.<\/p>\n

Our orchard trees are growing and even beginning to bear fruit!<\/p>\n

Thanks to the work of our dedicated Programme Action Officer we have now paid for trees to be planted at a primary school. They asked for orchard trees and these have now been planted.<\/p>\n

UN 16 Days to Orange the World Campaign to Eliminate Violence Against Women<\/strong><\/p>\n

Each year from 25th November to 16 December Soroptimists join with many others to support the UN campaign to draw attention to the various forms of violence against women and girls, from domestic abuse to child marriage to human trafficking and sexual exploitation to child marriage to FGM.\u00a0 We have posted every day on Facebook to remind as many people as possible about this dreadful alternative pandemic.<\/p>\n

Implementing the SDGs: Helping the Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n

SI Edinburgh works in partnership with UN House Scotland which is based in Edinburgh. Each year UN House host a number\u00a0 of interns, students who are interested in working on international events, projects and other activities supporting the work of the United Nations. Recently a group of interns have produced a Guide of practical tips for helping the environment. It is a really easy read and full of very useful tips.<\/p>\n
