{"id":5789,"date":"2021-08-31T12:44:42","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T11:44:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/epsom-and-district\/?p=5789"},"modified":"2021-10-08T20:13:16","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T19:13:16","slug":"5789","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/epsom-and-district\/2021\/08\/31\/5789\/","title":{"rendered":"What is happening to our food?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As part of SIGBI Day of Action, we\u00a0 listened to a podcast and discussed\u00a0 what is happing to our food.\u00a0 We looked at\u00a0 where we buy our food from ( e.g. local shops, supermarkets, delivery) and where it originates from. Whether we buy food from\u00a0 another country which has the appropriate climate compared to growing it in the UK under &#8216;forced&#8217; conditions. In this situation, importing food and shipping\u00a0 may be\u00a0 more viable economically and create less greenhouse gases from carbon emissions. Buying seasonally grown vegetables and fruit in this country is also advocated.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0 discussed waste, for example preparing too much food and throwing it away or throwing away food that goes beyond its sell- by date.\u00a0 Making batches of food and freezing it is a good process to use as well as\u00a0 using up ingredients already in the fridge or cupboard and inventing new dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Too much food consumption\u00a0 can be\u00a0 dealt with through portion control,\u00a0 for example weighing out rice and pasta or using the size of a fist to calculate portions.\u00a0 \u00a0 One outcome from the discussions\u00a0 included introducing cooking sessions\u00a0 for members to participate in together.\u00a0 \u00a0You can listen to the podcast here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p06y1mrk\">BBC Radio 4 &#8211; New Year Solutions, Food<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week, the Club were encouraged to take a simple Carbon Calculator Quiz and send in their scores. At present,\u00a0 2 members have already completed the quiz and have come out with low scores of producing 6.7 tonnes of CO2 annually.
