Day 1 – 16 days of activism\/orange the world<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Digital violence<\/strong> refers to any act of aggression, control, or abuse carried out through technology.
It includes behaviours that cause psychological, emotional, financial, reputational, or physical harm<\/strong> \u2014 and its impact reaches far beyond the screen.<\/p>\n

In a world where so much of life happens through phones, apps, and social media, technology has become a new tool for exerting power and control. For women and girls already disproportionately affected by gender-based violence, digital violence adds another layer of fear, complexity, and vulnerability.<\/p>\n

Why Does Digital Violence Matter?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Because it is now one of the fastest-growing forms of violence against women<\/em>.
Because it often precedes or accompanies physical abuse<\/strong>.
Because it follows survivors everywhere<\/strong> \u2014 into work, friendships, relationships, and home.<\/p>\n

And because many people experiencing it don\u2019t even realise it has a name<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Common Forms of Digital Violence<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. Online harassment and bullying<\/strong>
Racist, misogynistic, or threatening messages; dog-piling; mass reporting; trolling.<\/p>\n

2. Image-based abuse<\/strong>
Sharing intimate images without consent, pressuring someone for photos, or threatening to leak them.<\/p>\n

3. Digital stalking & surveillance<\/strong>
Tracking someone\u2019s movements through apps, shared accounts, Find My iPhone, or hidden devices; monitoring social media activity; using spyware.<\/p>\n

4. Coercive control using technology<\/strong>
Demanding passwords, checking messages, reading private emails, accessing banking apps.<\/p>\n

5. Deepfakes and manipulated images<\/strong>
AI-generated images or videos used to humiliate, threaten, or silence women.<\/p>\n

6. Financial digital abuse<\/strong>
Taking control of online subscriptions, banking apps, shopping accounts; draining funds; opening accounts in someone\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

7. Doxxing and public shaming<\/strong>
Posting personal information, home address, phone number, or spreading reputational harm.<\/p>\n

8. Tech-enabled domestic abuse<\/strong>
Smart cameras, doorbells, home devices, or apps misused to monitor, intimidate, or manipulate.<\/p>\n

Who Is Most Affected?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Women and girls experience digital violence at higher rates<\/strong>, especially:<\/p>\n

    young women<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    activists and women with public profiles<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Black and minoritised women<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    women leaving or recovering from domestic abuse<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    refugee or migrant women<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    women in controlling or isolating relationships<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Technology can make violence feel inescapable<\/strong>. Survivors describe feeling monitored, watched, \u2018never alone\u2019, or as though their phone has turned into an extension of the abuser.<\/p>\n

    Is Digital Violence \u2018Real\u2019 Violence? Absolutely.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Digital violence affects:<\/p>\n

      mental health<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      safety<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      career and online presence<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      ability to leave a relationship<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      connection with friends and community<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      It is not a separate problem.
      It is part of the continuum of violence against women and girls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      Why the 16 Days of Activism?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      From 25 November to 10 December, individuals, organisations and communities around the world come together to:<\/p>\n

        During this year\u2019s campaign, we\u2019re focusing on Digital Violence<\/strong> \u2014 because understanding it is the first step toward preventing it.<\/p>\n
