In its long history, Glasgow\u2019s Merchants\u2019 House may have hosted many a tea party but Saturday\u2019s Soroptimist Matinee Cabaret Fundraiser for Mary\u2019s Meals<\/a> must surely be unique.<\/p>\n

More than one hundred guests were welcomed to the event by President of SI Glasgow City, Myrtle Peterkin. Elegant and eloquent as ever, she outlined Soroptimist principles and reminded the gathering that the event was in aid of Mary\u2019s Meals<\/a> for their continued services in providing a daily meal, in schools, to 1.3 million children in 17 of the world\u2019s poorest countries.<\/p>\n

The entertainment was given by husband and wife team Gordon Cree and Cheryl Forbes, both outstanding soloists, whose powerful voices filled The Grand Hall with favourite melodies from musical shows, traditional refrains and comic songs performed with evident enjoyment to the delight of the audience.<\/p>\n

While our talented duo took a break, guests enjoyed a chat over afternoon tea \u00a0and raffle prizes were distributed. Thanks to the very desirable gifts donated by Club members and local businesses, the raffle raised the handsome sum of \u00a31,000.<\/p>\n

The second half of the programme, much to the amusement of all, included a performance on that famous musical instrument, THE SAW, and another on the hunting horn!\u00a0\u00a0 Gordon certainly knows how to entertain!<\/p>\n

Cheryl\u2019s choice of pieces displayed her superb voice perfectly and was greatly appreciated by the listeners.<\/p>\n

It was a very happy way to spend a chilly Saturday afternoon and President Myrtle, her committee and Club members are grateful to all friends and Soroptimists, from clubs as far away as Crieff, who gave the event their generous support.<\/p>\n
