The UN has set a target to end\u00a0 Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by 2030 but with 3 million girls annually at risk, its a mammoth task.\u00a0 The\u00a0 numbers are\u00a0 likely to\u00a0 worsen because of Covid as with schools closed\u00a0 and families in poverty the girls are less protected from\u00a0 FGM\u00a0 and Child marriage.<\/p>\n<p>What is FGM?\u00a0\u00a0 Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The physical complications can be fatal and the severe psychological trauma and physical effects last a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>The use of a razor blade or crude knife and no anaesthetic make it a terrifying event, almost always perpetrated by a local woman (cutter) and organised by female relatives.\u00a0 In some countries the mutilation may be done by a health professional as a sterile procedure which is safer but is still a violation of girl\u2019s rights, with long term consequences.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5428&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][vc_column_text]Why does it happen?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is estimated that at least 200 million girls alive today have been subjected to FGM and it\u2019s still happening because of traditions and beliefs including the idea that it preserves chastity, family honour, cleanliness and preserves a girl for marriage. \u00a0It is done to girls between the first year of life and up until adulthood. \u00a0Once a teenager has had FGM child marriage usually follows with the loss of education and the risks of early pregnancy. There is no religious reason for FGM and it occurs in at least 30 countries of which more than 50% have laws against it.<\/p>\n<p>Where does it happen?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The practice is mainly concentrated in a band from the Atlantic coast to the Horn of Africa, in some countries in \u00a0the Middle East and Asia,\u00a0 as well as among migrants from these areas. FGM is therefore a global concern.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]What are Grange Soroptimists\u00a0 doing to help eradicate FGM ?<\/p>\n<p>Soroptimists of\u00a0 Grange -over -Sands\u00a0 and Lancaster\u00a0 provide financial and practical help to Cath Holland, a midwife\u00a0 living in Grange who set up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondfgm.com\/\">Beyond FGM<\/a> in Kenya. This charity has a team of Kenyans working in West Pokot who educate not only girls and women, but the village leaders, politicians, traditional birth attendants (many of whom are also cutters) and the local boys about FGM through different courses and for the girls they conclude with an \u201cAlternative Rite of Passage ceremony\u201d with celebrations, dancing and \u00a0the distribution of bracelets made by\u00a0 Soroptimists. This approach has been most successful in preventing FGM in over 6,000 girls.\u00a0 Courses are continuing in Pokot\u00a0 during the pandemic.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5451&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5431&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5427&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5426&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column][\/vc_column][vc_column][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The club\u00a0 have been active on social media for the #16DaysofActivism\u00a0 against gender based violence and for the International Day for Zero Tolerance for FGM using #EndFGM and @GMCEndFGM\u00a0\u00a0 ( Global Media Campaign.)<\/p>\n<p>The club has supported\u00a0 Soroptimist projects including the International President\u2019s appeal \u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.soroptimistinternational.org\/si-road-to-equality-endfgm-the-soroptimist-six\/\">The Road to Equality<\/a>\u201d (2019-2021)\u00a0 and the Meru project \u00a0( 2016 \u2013 2019) tackling FGM in Kenya,\u00a0 Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia , Gambia and , through direct education and a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalmediacampaign.org\/\">Global media campaign<\/a> @GMCEndFGM. \u00a0\u00a0Of these countries FGM is illegal in Kenya, Gambia and some Nigerian states but still occurs.<\/p>\n<p>Soroptimists are working in multiple ways to tackle FGM and the words Educate, Empower, Enable are so apt for this mammoth task.
