{"id":6686,"date":"2024-09-30T20:23:21","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T19:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/grange-over-sands\/?p=6686"},"modified":"2024-09-30T20:37:37","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T19:37:37","slug":"how-did-grange-soroptimists-help-hit-the-headlines-about-plastics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/grange-over-sands\/2024\/09\/30\/how-did-grange-soroptimists-help-hit-the-headlines-about-plastics\/","title":{"rendered":"How did Grange Soroptimists help hit the headlines about  Plastics?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;6678&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][vc_column_text]From 11-18 March 2024 Grange Soroptimists took part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.uk\/news\/heres-what-we-learned-from-counting-4-million-pieces-of-plastic\/\">Big Plastic Count<\/a> organised by Greenpeace counting all our single use plastic items thrown away during the week.\u00a0 On average each person threw away 23 items (food &amp; drink 81%, cleaning &amp; toiletries 8%, everything else 11%), and many of them unsuitable for kerb side recycling. Our results were very similar to the national results and highlighted that although we need to REUSE\u00a0 and RECYCLE the most important thing is to REDUCE plastic use.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;6677&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Information from the National Survey\u00a0 showed 1 in 300 of the population had taken part and estimated that UK households throw away 1.7 billion pieces of plastic a week. The media interest\u00a0 in the results was considerable and got the problem noticed.\u00a0 Its known that\u00a0 the UK is second only to the US in the amount of plastic waste produced per person which is a horrifying statistic. What happens to our waste plastic?[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;6679&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]So as a result of our participation we\u00a0 have acted to :<\/p>\n<p>REDUCE our use of single use plastic and shared ideas at a club meeting with such varied suggestions as a scourer made of nut husks and recycled plastic bottles,\u00a0 water flosser ( rather than plastic interdental brushes) glass milk bottles,\u00a0 making your own yoghurt in glass jars,\u00a0 covering food with a plate , reusable lid, biodegradable film, beeswax wrapper or\u00a0 re use a plastic box, avoid plastic packaging by taking a box to butchers or bag to greengrocer or choosing to\u00a0 buy items like loo rolls with no plastic packaging..
