A very warm welcome from our President, Sandra.
I became President in April 2020, soon after the country went into lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This has presented us with some unique challenges as we are unable to meet face to face or to hold fund-raising events at the present time. However, I believe as Soroptimists, we are resourceful and determined women, who think laterally and outside the box. Consequently we are finding different ways to continue to meet and maintain our work.
We are a small but friendly club. When we meet there is much laughter and we are very supportive of each other. There are two main aspects to our programme – Programme Action and our social events.
Programme Action is the main focus of our work, through which we support a variety of projects, both locally and further afield. We fund raise for a specific project each year and we also provide practical support and help for a wide variety of other organisations.
This year we will fundraise and provide practical support for Sheffield Hospitals Charity – Dementia Appeal. I have chosen this appeal as the number of people living with or affected by dementia is increasing every year and I expect that most of us will know someone who has been affected by this condition. This appeal will raise money to create hospital spaces specially designed with the unique needs of dementia patients in mind.
Our members also put their practical skills to use:- knitting blankets and making quilts and other items for premature babies at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, knitting hats and scarves and providing school clothes for refugee children. We also collect and recycle a number of items for charity.
We support international projects. We are supporting the SIGBI international project, Empowering Girls in Nepal and also the Soroptimist International President’s appeal “The Road to Equality”, which aims to to advance the human rights and equality of women and girls.
Our social programme encompasses a variety of activities which include talks with invited speakers, visits to places of interest and we join together for a meal several times in the year.
We are linked to SI Sutton Coldfield, who we usually meet socially once each year and attend special events at each other’s clubs if possible. We also hope to provide practical support for each other’s Programme Action projects.
We look forward to an interesting year, in which we will have fun fulfilling our aims as Soroptimists.
