President’s message 2017 – 2018

Welcome to Soroptimist International of Hertford and District.

I am delighted and proud to be serving as President again this year and have chosen as my theme “Women around the World”. Our Speaker Programme will allow us a glimpse of the lives of women in different countries and cultures, and our continued support of the Federation Project,” Meru Women’s Garden Project in Kenya” and the International President’s Appeal, “Educate to Lead – Nepal”, will lead to change in the lives of women and girls in these communities.

Recognising the role of education in changing the lives of women and girls, my chosen charity is A-CET(African Children’s Educational Trust), a small, independent charity, building schools in rural Ethiopia and providing places for large numbers of girls. We shall also be supporting the valuable work of WaterAid; when they bring water to remote villages and communities, it is women and girls who benefit most.

We have been giving service to our own community of Hertford and District for over 60 years. We have an ongoing commitment to Safer Places, our local Women’s Refuge, and the Living Room in Stevenage, a centre treating addictions of all sorts and can be instrumental in keeping women out of prison. Although our Isabel Hospice is not women and girls specific, we shall again be holding our annual Tea Party, to raise money for an organisation which touches everyone in our locality.
On the occasion of our Diamond Anniversary last year, we pledged to fund an award for a young woman studying engineering. This sits alongside our other two prizes to Sele School and Presdales School. The first is given in memory of a former member of our club and Deputy Head of the school, who believed passionately in girls’ education, and the second is awarded to a student from our local girls’ school for Service and Leadership.

However, we are not just about fund-raising: we value the friendship and fun obtained from coming together to help one another and the wider community. We care deeply about issues relating in particular to women and girls, and support our wider international organisation in lobbying and working for change both at home and abroad.

If you would like to know more, why not get in touch with us or come along to a speaker meeting, or indeed to any of our events. We would love to see you, and you can be assured of a very warm welcome.
