Wednesday 5th July – Friendship Lunch
The Old Golf House Hotel at Outlane was the venue for our annual Friendship lunch. We were delighted to be joined by representatives from the Soroptimist Clubs of Halifax, Bradford, Wakefield and Bingley. We were especially pleased to welcome seven members of our Friendship link club from Ashton Under Lyne as well as our Regional President, Judith Alce. We enjoyed a delicious meal and were also very pleased to raise £60 with a raffle in aid of our President’s charity, Alzheimer’s Society
A ‘Line up of Presidents’!
Saturday 10th July – Strawberry Tea
The sun shone for our annual Strawberry Tea at the home of our Treasurer, Gwen Schofield. The event was attended by approximately 60 members and visitors. Notable guests included our Regional President, Judith Alce and the Deputy Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Eric Firth. Needless to say, a good time was had by all and £455 was raised for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Our President, Josie Firth together with Councillor Firth…but no, they are not related!
Monday 12th July – A special speaker at our club meeting
President Josie introduced Julie Tweedale, from ‘Freedom Personal Safety’. She had come along to thank the club for arranging a Women’s Self Defence Session four years ago at an International Women’s Day event.
As a result of Julie attending the session, she and a friend decided to train as instructors in Self Defence and went to America to attend the training course. Since then, they have set up ‘Freedom Personal Safety’ and have been running training sessions for women in parts of Yorkshire and Lancashire, having given up their previous jobs! They are about to undergo further training in the USA which will enable them to run ‘Keep Safe’ courses for children in the Autumn.
Julie was able to explain to members how her life had completely changed after attending that single session in 2006 and she wanted to let the club know the outcome. She presented President Josie with a Bouquet of flowers. What wonderful feedback!
Friday 24th September – Coffee Morning
Birkby Croft Sheltered Housing was the venue for a very successful coffee morning where we sold homemade cakes and preserves, cards, and craft items, as well as running a tombola. It was a very successful event, enjoyed by all! We were able to donate funds of £178 to Macmillan Nurses.
Saturday 9th October – ‘An Evening of Nostalgia’
In our 75th Anniversary year, it was fitting that we were all entertained at a 40’s evening by Paul Harper, who certainly lived up to his reputation as a consumate versatile entertainer, specializing in the 30s and 40s. Refreshments were served, in keeping with the era, but cetainly with no scimping on the cooking incredients! We were delighted to welcome the Mayoress,Liz Palfreeman, to the evening and she is shown here with President Joyce, suitably dressed for the occasion! Proceeds,of £175, were in support of Huddersfield Alzheimer’s Association.
