{"id":5120,"date":"2023-09-18T16:05:52","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T15:05:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/?p=5120"},"modified":"2023-09-18T16:05:52","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T15:05:52","slug":"our-meeting-in-september-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/2023\/09\/18\/our-meeting-in-september-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Our meeting in September 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 21px\">We were delighted to w<a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/Conny-Pat-120923.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5121\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/Conny-Pat-120923-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/Conny-Pat-120923-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/Conny-Pat-120923.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>elcome Conny Looi Osborne from our sister club, SI Bangsay, Malaysia who was over in the UK visiting relatives in Ipswich.\u00a0 She is a great advocate for our organisation and very involved in the project work her Club has undertaken in the last couple of years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 21px\">In a six month period they ran a &#8216;bank&#8217;\u00a0 to serve Malaysians who were in financial difficulties due to the\u00a0 pandemic.\u00a0 This involved both food and money supplied by their club members to the public who were in need.\u00a0 They estimate they gave some respite to 2500 families.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 21px\">Following a tropical depression which made landfall on 16 Dec 2021, bringing torrential rains throughout Peninsula Malaysia over 3 days help was needed to those affected by the floods in 8 states, involving some 125,000 people .At its height more than 71,000 victims were displaced. The most badly affected were Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Perak. Aid poured in from the public and NGOs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 21px\">SI Bangsay members raised RM31,444.30, including AUD3000 from Sortoptimist International\u00a0 South West Pacific Disaster Relief Fund and AUD250 from our Friendship Link Club, SI Helena.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 21px\">The focused on remote and neglected suburbia housing developments fringing rivers and forestation occupied by the Orang Asli (indigenous people) distributing kitchen equipment, rice cookers and fans, blankets, bedding, sanitary towels and bottles of water.\u00a0 In all they helped 52 families from low cost homes, 38 families in indigenous people\u2019s homes and provided building materials for 9 indigenous homes so they could be repaired.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 21px\">They are also very proud of their project: Teenage Survival Kit.\u00a0 This was designed to support Teenagers to navigate, air their concerns and provide professional guidance and knowledge in the areas of health, safety, sexuality and empowerment.\u00a0 \u00a0 They were successful in their application for the Brilliant Futures Fund from SISEAP in 2022.\u00a0 \u00a0Conducted vias both zoom and in person workshops through schools, colleges and universities theyinvited teenagers to prepare a video using mobile phone on any teenage issues.\u00a0 This enabled them to launch their Teenage survivial Kit on social media platforms in October 2022 as part of their 30th Annivsrsary.\u00a0 This project is ongoing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;font-size: 24px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/files\/2012\/05\/every-6-seconds.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-234\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/files\/2012\/05\/every-6-seconds-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/files\/2012\/05\/every-6-seconds-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/ipswich-and-district\/files\/2012\/05\/every-6-seconds.jpg 352w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/a>Sadly, it is much more difficult in the UK for Soroptimists to do work with teenagers via education establishments.\u00a0 With the tight timetables and regulations regard to working with children we cannot easily do such needed work with those who need help in the areas of health, safety, sexuality and empowerment.\u00a0 But we presented Conny with details of our projects and gave her a copy of the important book we helped to bring to fruition in conjunction with clients of Lighthouse Women&#8217;s Aid &#8216;Every Six Seconds&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We were delighted to welcome Conny Looi Osborne from our sister club, SI Bangsay, Malaysia&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":455,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5120","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-club-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Our meeting in September 2023 | News | Blog | Events | SI Ipswich and District<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"SI Ipswich and District : Blog &amp; News : Our meeting in September 2023 : Keep up to date with the latest news, articles and events from the Soroptimists of SI Ipswich and District .
