President’s Message for Website 2019-2020
After a successful year last year with Christine Spink by my side as Joint Presidents, I feel more confident to go it alone this year. I was delighted to welcome 4 new members at our recent AGM on 24 April.
The Club will be supporting some new initiatives this year including The 13th Parish Film Festival 17-19 May, we are delighted to be supporting the Jenny Lecoat screenwriting award for the best short screenplay for a story about women.
We are also very excited to announce our sponsorship of Lauren Harzo in the ‘Boxin Business Jersey White Collar Boxing’ taking place at the RJA&HS on Saturday 18th May.‘My chosen charity is the Jersey Women’s Refuge, explains Lauren. ‘In 1988 my Aunty founded the Jersey Women’s Refuge as the only independent domestic violence charity in Jersey. Having grown up in a loving supportive home, where my family have instilled in me high self-esteem and self-worth, I feel it is unjust that a safe and caring home life is not everyone’s reality. We often take for granted the encouragement and emotional help we receive from our friends and family. I am so grateful for the people that surround me. I have seen that for some, the Women’s Refuge are those people.’My Aunt is also a long standing member of SI Jersey so it means a lot to me personally that SI Jersey members have agreed to sponsor me for this challenge.’ If anyone wants to donate to my appeal please visit my just giving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lauren-harzo Thank you so much!’
We are looking forward to some excellent speakers at our monthly meetings at The Monterey Hotel, including new member Jayne Gruchy who now works for Jersey Action Against Rape (JAAR), Elis Joudalova from Olio, Beth Moore the Manager of the Jersey Recovery College, Lucy Layton, Jersey Heritage Curator with her talk ‘History and her story – a celebration of Jersey Women’, and Lesley Katsande from Friends of Africa.
We also look forward to working with our new school Soroptimist Club at Beaulieu and helping them with their ideas to help ‘educate, empower and enable’ women and girls locally, nationally and internationally.
November will again see us in Waitrose, St Brelade for the Poppy Appeal and also at Ransom’s Garden Centre over three week-ends in November and December for the Jersey Christmas Appeal.
We always look forward to our January dinner at The Moorings and we welcome learning more about the life of a female pilot from Jane Delap.
In February 2019 our inaugural Zumba Glow event at Hautlieu School raised £1,820 for the Jersey Women’s Refuge. We had decided to make this an eco event, so no glow sticks just fantastic UV lighting, glow make up and brilliant music of course to get us all moving! Plans are in the pipeline for February 2020.
In March we hope to be presenting another film in association with the Jersey Film Society around the date of International Women’s Day – details to follow and we will be planning another ‘No More Taboo Period’ Campaign – our 28 day campaign to talk about periods, collect period protection and suggest ideas for more sustainable options that are now available.
And before we know it, it will be another AGM in April and my year as President will be over again and the Club will be looking to celebrate its 70th anniversary – having been chartered on 9 December 1950.
