Our Campaign<\/h2>\n

\"DayWe are taking part in the UN International Campaign of 16 Days of Activism to end Gender Based Violence; 25th November to 10th December 2024.\u00a0 \u00a0This year’s theme is prevention<\/h3>\n

Internationally, Orange is the colour theme for this campaign.\u00a0 \u00a0 As Soroptimists, we are aiming, over the 16 Days, to highlight the impact of Violence against Women and Girls –\u00a0 both locally and nationally in the UK by holding a number of ‘Orange’ events here in Kenilworth.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Violence against women and girls…<\/h3>\n

means any act of gender based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering.\u00a0 \u00a0This includes threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.<\/p>\n

Domestic Abuse<\/h3>\n

The purple flowers each represent a woman who was killed by a man. Sadly that’s TWO women EVERY week during 2023<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Crime Survey for England and Wales<\/em><\/a> estimates that there are 2.3 million victims of domestic abuse each year.\u00a0 \u00a0Two thirds are women<\/strong>. More than 2 women a week are killed by a current or former partner in the UK.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The police recorded 1.5 million abuse-related incidents and crimes in England and Wales in the year ending March 2022. The number of domestic abuse-related crimes increased by 7.7% compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n

The UN<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>states that globally, 81,000 women and girls were killed in 2020 (58% at the hands of an intimate partner or family member) which equates to a woman or girl killed every 11 minutes in their home.<\/p>\n

The National Policing Statement 2024<\/a> doesn’t make any better reading.<\/p>\n

Violence Against Women and Girls\u00a0 (VAWG) has reached epidemic levels in England and Wales, in terms of its scale,
\ncomplexity and impact on victims. We have seen a 37% increase in recorded VAWG related crimes from 2018\/19 to 2022\/23
\nand we estimate that at least 1 in every 12 women will be a victim of VAWG every year (2 million victims) and 1 in 20 adults
\nin England and Wales will be a perpetrator of VAWG every year (2.3million perpetrators). These are cautious estimates as we know much crime goes unreported and in policing, we often only see the tip of the iceberg.
\nSince February 2023 VAWG has been classified as a \u2018national threat to public safety\u2019 (same category as terrorism and organised crime)<\/p>\n
