{"id":1147,"date":"2015-09-16T16:48:20","date_gmt":"2015-09-16T15:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/?p=1147"},"modified":"2015-09-16T16:48:20","modified_gmt":"2015-09-16T15:48:20","slug":"september-2015-six-specialist-sick-childrens-nurses-a-year-so-what-difference-could-so-few-nurses-possibly-make","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/2015\/09\/16\/september-2015-six-specialist-sick-childrens-nurses-a-year-so-what-difference-could-so-few-nurses-possibly-make\/","title":{"rendered":"September  2015 &#8211; Six specialist sick children&#8217;s nurses a year &#8211; so what difference could so few nurses possibly make?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>I have been struggling to get my head round some of the facts and figures I&#8217;ve been given over the past two days.<\/h3>\n<h3>Today I&#8217;ve been taken on a tour round the paediatric hospital by Dr Neil Kennedy; sadly seeing is believing.<\/h3>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Children&#8217;s Hospital is part of\u00a0Queens.\u00a0Every year\u00a0100,000 children are seen in A&amp;E and outpatients and\u00a025,000 children are treated as inpatients on 7 wards.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\u00a0At any one time on average 75 children ( although it can be up to 100) can be cared for on just one of these wards.\u00a0At busy times there may be two or even three children to a bed, some may even be cared for on the floor.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0Each ward is staffed by two\u00a0nurses per\u00a0shift. One nurse will have had basic training, the other a general nursing degree.\u00a0There are currently NO specialist child health\u00a0nurses.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>The hospital is hoping to get six\u00a0from the first\u00a0cohort of twelve child health nurses that has just qualified, but this won&#8217;t even\u00a0be enough cover for one per ward, never mind one per shift. AND THIS IS ONE OF THE FOUR MAIN HOSPITALS!<\/div>\n<div>I\u00a0can&#8217;t even remember counting how many nurses were on each ward I visited at Birmingham Children&#8217;s Hospital, they were just everywhere. \u00a0 Can you imagine the scandal if the same the staff ratio applied here, or\u00a0there was\u00a0doubling up of beds, or nursing of children\u00a0on a floor in the UK?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>These specialist child health nurses will affect the lives not only of the children admitted to Queens, but\u00a0more nurses with this qualification will mean that some can be\u00a0sent to the 22\u00a0District Hospitals &#8211;\u00a0who currently\u00a0have even less access to paediatric trained nurses.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><strong>As Malawian mums\u00a0tend to have large families that&#8217;s a lot of women and children.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Change and improvement cannot take place without good\u00a0leadership and that is what these nurses will provide.<\/div>\n<div>As one of the nurse tutors we met yesterday commented &#8216; Nurses never retire!&#8217;. \u00a0So we will be <strong>educating<\/strong> these women for life to<strong> empower<\/strong> them to <strong>enable<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>the\u00a0improvement of\u00a0the lives of many\u00a0thousands of\u00a0women and children in Malawi.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1149\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1149\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/Sharon-and-Neil.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1149 size-full\" src=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/Sharon-and-Neil.jpg\" alt=\"Sharon and Neil\" width=\"213\" height=\"159\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1149\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Neil Kennedy and Sharon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been struggling to get my head round some of the facts and figures&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":391,"featured_media":1149,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1147","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sharons-blog"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>September 2015 - Six specialist sick children&#039;s nurses a year - so what difference could so few nurses possibly make? | News | Blog | Events | SI Kenilworth and District<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"SI Kenilworth and District : Blog &amp; News : September 2015 - Six specialist sick children&#039;s nurses a year - so what difference could so few nurses possibly make? : Keep up to date with the latest news, articles and events from the Soroptimists of SI Kenilworth and District .
