Pharmacy in the New Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s official, I&#8217;m old!\u00a0 I give a lecture to the final year Pharmacy students on &#8216;safe prescribing for geriatrics &#8216; &#8211; me giving a lecture to final year pharmacy students<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although I&#8217;ve been in email contact, we finally meet the delightful Monalisa, the pharmacist who takes over at Queens when Stan finishes this week. \u00a0 It seems quite amazing that someone who has only just qualified should be running the pharmacy for a tertiary hospital of more than 30 wards and departments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1220\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1220\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080216.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1220\" src=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080216-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Monalisa and I chat over an iced coffee, yum!\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080216-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080216.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1220\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monalisa and I chat over an iced coffee, yum!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s full of bright ideas and is already popular with many of the clinicians we&#8217;ve met. \u00a0 We share some of the issues that have been raised about pharmacy from our various meetings, especially with the supply problems. \u00a0 Clearly some of this is beyond her control but we discuss ways she can improve communication to the departments, and at least make the most of the stocks available.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s keen to introduce standard operating procedures (SOP) starting with the pre-packing of medicines and stock control.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve promised to send her examples of SOPs so any of my technicians reading this, get your thinking caps on for when I&#8217;m back next week!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1221\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1221\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080242.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1221\" src=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080242-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"What smart pre-packs!\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080242-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080242.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What smart pre-packs!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We also visit a community pharmacy owned by Mr and Mrs Mataya in Central Blantyre, its very impressive and shows what pharmacy can do in Malawi. \u00a0 The young pharmacist, Aggrey, is a classmate of Monalisa, however he&#8217;s got the benefit of supervision and training. \u00a0 The pharmacy is bright and clean, with a computer. \u00a0 They also do very smart pre-packs!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1218\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1218\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080235.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1218\" src=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080235-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Aggrey at work\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080235-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/P1080235.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aggrey at work<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some of the medicines available for sale, as &#8216;pharmacist initiation&#8217;
