{"id":1244,"date":"2015-09-29T07:51:59","date_gmt":"2015-09-29T06:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/?p=1244"},"modified":"2015-09-29T07:51:59","modified_gmt":"2015-09-29T06:51:59","slug":"september-2015-a-day-in-the-life-of-a-soroptimister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/2015\/09\/29\/september-2015-a-day-in-the-life-of-a-soroptimister\/","title":{"rendered":"September 2015 &#8211;  A day in the life of a Soroptimister."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it&#8217;s\u00a0my chance to become a blogger!<\/p>\n<p>Sharon has\u00a0a calendar clash, and reluctantly agrees\u00a0that even she can&#8217;t be in two places at once.\u00a0 We had planned to meet Dr Neil Kennedy for a guided tour of the One Stop Centre for victims of abuse,\u00a0supported by SI Kenilworth in the past through FOSCiM. \u00a0 Neil is justifiably very proud of it.<\/p>\n<p>However, Sharon has\u00a0managed to arrange to link up with SI Blantyre for a business meeting at the same time!\u00a0 For some reason, she thought it preferable for her to go to the Soroptimist\u00a0meeting, leaving me to visit the One Stop Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Neil and I escape from the mid-morning heat and step into the welcoming foyer. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We are welcomed by Lucy, a very friendly and motherly nurse who is the first contact for the often distressed young abuse victims on arrival.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1246\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1246\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/Neil-and-Lucy-at-the-One-Stop-Centre.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1246\" src=\"\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/Neil-and-Lucy-at-the-One-Stop-Centre-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Neil and Lucy at the One Stop Centre\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/Neil-and-Lucy-at-the-One-Stop-Centre-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2015\/09\/Neil-and-Lucy-at-the-One-Stop-Centre.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1246\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Neil and Lucy at the One Stop Centre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As I am shown around, I see a relaxing environment &#8211; there are comfortable settees and armchairs in one room, and another room has a colourful carpet, and lots of toys for younger victims.\u00a0 On one wall is a large one-way mirror, so that sessions can be observed without intimidating the victim, and may in future be video-recorded.\u00a0 Next I am shown a spotless examination room and a nice en-suite shower room.<\/p>\n<p>These are the services available from the centre:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nursing staff and a doctor handle the medical\/clinical issues such as testing and if necessary treatment of HIV, as well as collection of evidence &#8211; photographs and specimens<\/li>\n<li>Community Child Protection Worker from the District Social Welfare Office<\/li>\n<li>Full time volunteer counsellor provided by Fountain of Life<\/li>\n<li>Community Policing from the Victims Support Unit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A template form is completed for each case, ensuring all the information \/ evidence needed is collected, which means that the poor victim only needs to tell their\u00a0story once.\u00a0 All in all, an impressively holistic approach! Up to 30 victims are seen each month, and numbers are increasing as awareness levels are raised &#8211; the centre only opened in February 2013.\u00a0 Three quarters of the time the offenders are people who have gained trust of the child over a period of time.
