{"id":4698,"date":"2020-04-29T10:44:49","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T09:44:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/?p=4698"},"modified":"2020-06-01T16:50:38","modified_gmt":"2020-06-01T15:50:38","slug":"when-being-at-home-is-not-the-safest-place-to-be-in-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/2020\/04\/29\/when-being-at-home-is-not-the-safest-place-to-be-in-lockdown\/","title":{"rendered":"When being at home is NOT the safest place to be in lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/news\/2019\/october\/commons-domestic-abuse-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Domestic Violence Bill<\/a> has never been more important. \u00a0 The average number of deaths used to be a shocking\u00a0 two a week. \u00a0 In the weeks since Covid 19 lockdown this has increased to <strong>FIVE<\/strong> per week<\/p>\n<p>As a Club and as individuals we\u2019ve sent letters and emails to our MPs regarding this bill that has just gone through its second reading. \u00a0 Most importantly it has gone through without a division and now goes to committee stage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2020\/04\/Domestic-Violence-House.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4781\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2020\/04\/Domestic-Violence-House-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Blue house icon on white background, red cross though and sad face icon to show Domestic Violence increase in Lockdown\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2020\/04\/Domestic-Violence-House-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2020\/04\/Domestic-Violence-House-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2020\/04\/Domestic-Violence-House.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is the letter that President Gill sent to Jeremy Wright, MP for Kenilworth. \u00a0 (She also wrote to Matt Western MP for Leamington)<\/p>\n<p>Dear Mr Wright<\/p>\n<p>You will be aware that 14 women and two children have been killed by their partners since the lock down commenced.<\/p>\n<p>I am writing to you on behalf of Kenilworth &amp; District Soroptimists to ask that you do your best to ensure the Domestic Abuse Bill is dealt with urgently.<\/p>\n<p>As Soroptimists, we would strongly support establishing:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 a statutory definition of Domestic Abuse that includes coercive control and economic abuse<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 the appointment of a Domestic Abuse Commissioner<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 the provision of a new Domestic Abuse Protection Order<\/p>\n<p>In addition, we feel that the Bill should emphasise the ongoing support to victims of domestic abuse and their children wherever they are located, not just those in refuges and other safe accommodation but those remaining in their own homes, in particular the use of 24 hour phone lines, and support directly for children.<\/p>\n<p>We note that children do not get a high profile in the Bill. The harm to children both living in domestic abuse situations and leaving them needs to be recognised. They are not \u2018just witnesses\u2019 to domestic abuse but victims too. They need to be identified as such and need to have access to the specialist services that can support them.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, when decisions are being made about children in Family Courts, perpetrators can cross examine their victims. We feel strongly that this needs to be prohibited.
