\u00a0If it was good enough for Gloriana&#8230;<\/h1>\n<p>We don&#8217;t usually meet in August but for those avoiding traffic jams, trying to reduce carbon footprints or staycationing in Kenilworth, President Amanda arranged some holiday downtime together.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6112\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6112\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5083.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6112\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5083.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5083.jpg 320w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5083-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We found the perfect place to set up our picnic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6117\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6117\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5091-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6117\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5091-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5091-rotated.jpg 240w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5091-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">And were delighted to see friends we&#8217;d invited from SI Leicester<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6119\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6119\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/PHOTO-2023-08-24-12-29-34-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6119\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/PHOTO-2023-08-24-12-29-34-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/PHOTO-2023-08-24-12-29-34-1.jpeg 240w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/PHOTO-2023-08-24-12-29-34-1-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We were taken on a guided tour of the castle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our VIP treatment included a special presentation of the talk President Amanda gives to visitors in her role as volunteer at the Castle.<a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5095-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6113\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5095-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Amanda entertained, amused and fascinated us with her description of the fourth and final visit of Elizabeth 1st to Kenilworth Castle in 1575. \u00a0Apparently this was Robert Dudley&#8217;s last ditch attempt to win the hand of Gloriana in marriage and he certainly pulled out all the stops!<\/p>\n<p>He even went to the trouble of having a special garden created for her, full of flowers and plants that conveyed messages of love and regard. \u00a0Then he topped that with a fountain featuring statues of himself and his brother Ambrose.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, for Robert, this was not enough to persuade Gloriana to hand over her power to a man.<\/p>\n<p>And as Soroptimists &#8211; we totally get that! \u00a0Here&#8217;s to working towards gender equality for us all.<a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5103-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-6109 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/kenilworth-and-district\/files\/2023\/09\/IMG_5103-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Picnic at the Castle?
