Phrase of the month: Soroptimists call for gender equality first to ensure a sustainable tomorrow
March 2022:
3rd Next year, three members will be sharing the President’s role doing four months each. Roles and content were planned. Each President will have a “buddy” to help during their months in the role. With the Planet and People as their theme and what effect this has on climate change.
5th Regional Meeting with a theme of purple and pearls
Whilst still being concerned with the effects of Covid, we again held the occasion on Zoom. Three most inspirational speakers talked about their very different roles and professions.
Louise Bennett OBE, DL: is the High Sherriff of the West Midlands – the oldest role from Saxon times and representing the Monarchy. She is also the Chief Executive of Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.
Helen Marriott: CEO Hamblin Fistula UK. She talked about Ethiopia and the injuries and poor health caused by inadequate maternity care. She told us how over 60,000 women had received treatment at Hamblin Hospitals throughout the country. Midwives are trained at Hamblin College of Midwifery. Soroptimists have supported these hospitals for many years.
Jennifer McClelland QPN, MA: She was awarded the Police Medal, such a brave lady, who told us her story of Breaking the Bias in the police force against women officers. She went to Thailand just after the Tsunami to help Britons reurn home.
8th International Women’s Day
16th A Zoom meeting was held by our Programme Action Group with Beth from the Turtle Bags Charity. Beth is our contact in the UK for Tarango, a charity in Bangladesh. We are organising a fundraiser for later in the year – a curry night and a possible auction to raise funds to help with building dwellings on stilts to combat the chaos caused by annual flooding.
19th Public speaking competition: This competition is held annually by Midland Arden Region. This year, our candidate, Eva Carter, took second place. See earlier in website for full report and pictures.
25th Violence Against Women Day. We wear badges on 25th of each month to show our support for the elimination of Violence Against Women.
31st Coffee morning at the The George in Bewdley.
Spring is here. Enjoy those wonderful long evenings.
