Our speakers at last night’s meeting were Claire and Gail from West Mercia Women’s Aid. Claire spoke about the services now offered by Women’s Aid in West Mercia covering Worcestershire & Herefordshire and Gail spoke of her role as a support worker at the Kidderminster Refuge. It was interesting to hear that the services for women and children escaping domestic violence have expanded and now include a 24/7 helpline, online group programmes, one to one and community support as well as providing safe accommodation within the Refuges. They are also now providing a range of services to support men who are suffering domestic abuse. What came through was the commitment and passion they both have and the rewards that come from helping women and children through their difficult journeys away from abuse. There are now two houses in Kidderminster with one currently still being refurbished. Once they move back, there will be places for 13 women and families.
We presented Claire with our donation of £540 which she indicated she would like to use for some special activity or treat for the residents, rather than spending it on the refurbishment. She will let us know what they use it for. She also hopes the refurbishment will be finished soon and would welcome our help in replanting the planters which we provided some time ago when we had some landscaping done at the refuge.
