for women and girls<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">and the bill provided a chance to create safe space.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;Too often, women and girls receive inadequate support from tech companies. They are left feeling isolated and forced offline,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">She added: &#8220;I have tabled an amendment calling for a Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Code of Practice to be written into the bill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;There are already codes for other issues such as terrorism and child abuse, but a code is desperately needed to specifically address the harms to women and girls.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Research by the charity Refuge found more than one in three British women have experienced online abuse on social media or another online platform<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">and that one in 10 survivors felt suicidal because of abuse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-19w8cxh-ComponentWrapper-HeadlineComponentWrapper egtrm1f0\" data-component=\"subheadline-block\">\n<h2 id=\"Stalked-and-harassed\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">Stalked and harassed<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\"><a class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/refuge.org.uk\/news\/international-internet-day-refuge-unsocial-spaces-report\/\">Amy Aldworth<\/a>, a survivor of tech abuse, said she was stalked and harassed on social media by a man she met on a dating app.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;Somehow he managed to find all of my social media accounts and even those of my friends and family. The messages just kept coming and no matter<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">how many times I blocked him, he would manage to create new profiles and continue to harass me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;At first, the police didn&#8217;t take the situation seriously and it took me filing an official complaint for them to press charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Just because abuse is happening online, it doesn&#8217;t mean that the effects of it aren&#8217;t serious.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;What made everything worse was not receiving a response from the dating app I used, after I had reported his abuse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;For all I know, he could still be using the platform, free to abuse other women just like me. It&#8217;s not good enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The government needs to ensure that these platforms are held accountable for the harm caused on them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Only through regulating online platforms can the government ensure that women like me are able to access justice and continue using these online spaces safely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The Online Safety Bill was introduced in March 2022 under Boris Johnson, and has been repeatedly altered during its passage through Parliament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Previously, making managers liable for a failure to comply with broader safety duties in the bill was rejected after a\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/online-harms-white-paper\/outcome\/online-harms-white-paper-full-government-response\">consultation<\/a>\u00a0ahead of the bill&#8217;s introduction,<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">which concluded it could make the UK tech sector less attractive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Baroness Morgan said: &#8220;Social media platforms should be incorporating safety features in their platforms from the start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">A code of practice will ensure that safety by design is part of this process and offer proper reporting tools for users and support when women and girls receive abuse,<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">threats and harassment online.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;It is disappointing that after years of debate and discussion about online safety, this bill still includes no specific mention of women and girls &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">we know that women and girls are the most impacted by abuse, harassment and hate online, so why have they been excluded from this legislation?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Signatories to the amendment include Baroness Kidron, the child online safety campaigner; Labour frontbencher Lord Knight of Weymouth<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">and is also backed by Tory peers Baroness Newlove, the former victims&#8217; commissioner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">A government spokesperson said: &#8220;We are committed to tackling online abuse and violence against women and girls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;In the Online Safety Bill, we have made it a priority for platforms to proactively tackle the most harmful illegal content<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">which disproportionately targets women and girls.
