Belated Happy New Year!

Goodness me – turns out I haven’t updated the site for ages and there is so much to tell!!

At our January Meeting, 3 new members were welcomed by President Pat.  They are Mary, Publican, Liz, Artisan and Karen who deals with Employment Law.  These are all new categories for our Club and we are delighted that they have joined us.  We look forward to getting to know them and learn from their experiences.

At the same meeting, we had a presentation about the charity ‘Chicks’.  President Pat had nominated Staffordshire Young Carers as her main charity.  It now seems that there have been some organisational changes concerning the provision for young carers.  She asked for a presentation by ‘Chicks’ as they are an organisation that offer respite care to children, including young carers.  They were also suggesting that our donation could be allocated to a local young carer although they work countrywide.  Club members asked for further information before making a decision about the donation and this will be discussed at our February meeting.  It also appears that CASS (the original recipients) are still operating and talks will be held with them about how we can still donate to them.

Also during the January meeting, we gathered coats that had been requested by the Domestic Violence Refuge run by the Salvation Army.  Members were able to deliver 25 warm coats that we hope will be put to good use.

As an extra event, not specifically Soroptimist Lichfield but very much in keeping with the club activity, Dishi hosted an evening at her house to raise funds for ‘Challenge 27’.  This was set up by friends of Michelle Frost who died of cervical cancer at the age of 27.  The friends aim to raise £27,000 in her memory for Katharine House Hospice in Stafford.  Michelle began the call to reduce the age at which a smear test can be done, a test that meant she need not have needlessly died.  Lin offered hints and tips on how to make the most of ourselves and three lovely ladies agreed to be ‘guinea pigs’.  Ryan from ‘The Salon’ in Lichfield came and did amazing hairstyles in keeping with the glamorous clothes.  We raised £200 and were pleased to give this to Karen, Michelle’s Mum.

So, a busy month all in all!  We have a further 4 ladies who are interested in joining Lichfield Soroptimists and the future looks bright!!
