{"id":350,"date":"2010-10-25T21:58:03","date_gmt":"2010-10-25T20:58:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soroptimist-gbi.org\/lichfield\/?p=347"},"modified":"2020-07-31T13:52:51","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T12:52:51","slug":"manchester-conference-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/2010\/10\/25\/manchester-conference-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"Manchester Conference 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>President Lesley, Donna, Angela and I attended theconference &#8211; I found these wonderful notes and unashamedly copied them into our site!!\u00a0 Margaret arrived for the AGM only.\u00a0 Very good conference!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First Full Day of Conference &#8211; There\u2019s a Buzz in the Air<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13\" src=\"http:\/\/soroptimist-gbi.co.uk\/manchester-conference\/files\/2010\/01\/bill-turnbull1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" \/><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<em>Bill Turnbull, popular BBC Broadcaster\u00a0was our first speaker &#8211; with \u201choneyed\u201d words he told us about his shared\u00a0interest with President Jackie Mosedale\u00a0in bee keeping. He informed us about\u00a0the Bees for Development charity<cite><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beesfordevelopment.org\/\">www.<strong>beesfordevelopment.<\/strong>org<\/a> Bill is patron of the Bees for Development Trust, \u00a0an international charity\u00a0working to\u00a0promote sustainable beekeeping in developing countries, to support livelihoods and\u00a0to conserve biodiversity.\u00a0<\/cite><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><cite>International President Hanne Jensbo updated us on the work of Soroptimist International around the world, and encouraged us to attend the International Convention in Montreal\u00a0July 10-14\u00a02011 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.si-montreal2011.org\/\">www.si-montreal2011.org\/<\/a><\/cite><\/p>\n<p><cite><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-77\" src=\"http:\/\/soroptimist-gbi.org\/manchester-conference\/files\/2010\/10\/03conf2010web-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Sierra\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/cite><\/p>\n<p><cite><\/cite>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><cite>Anne MacDonald encouraged us to go \u201cFull Steam Ahead\u201d for the last year of Project SIerra <a href=\"http:\/\/www.projectsierra.org\/\">www.<strong>projectsierra<\/strong>.org<\/a>\u00a0we have raised \u00a3700,000 and need another \u00a3300,000 to hit the \u00a31 million targe we set ourselves when we started the project in 2007. She gave us some great fundraising ideas &#8211; including sending our unwanted jewellery to raise funds &#8211; we can do this through our Regional Programme Action Officers.\u00a0<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Winners of Programme Action Awards &#8211; <\/strong>Three projects were presented in each of the Programme areas, and it must have been really tough to pick the winners!<\/p>\n<p>Economic and Social Development &#8211; \u201cWomen into work \u2013 mock interviews\u201d by Si Nottingham<\/p>\n<p>Education &#8211; \u201cSkirting Science\u201d by SI Weston Super-Mare<\/p>\n<p>Environment \u2013 \u201cLadies public toilets\u201d by SI York Ebor<\/p>\n<p>Health \u2013 \u201cWorld Aids Day\u201d \u2013 by SI Ikeja<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights and the Status of Women \u2013 \u201cDomestic Violence\u201d by SI Pune Metro East<\/p>\n<p>International Goodwill and Understanding \u2013 \u201cHospitality at the Eisteddford\u201d by SI Cheshire N Wales &amp; the Wirral<\/p>\n<p><strong>Renewing Friendship Links \u2013 <\/strong>see picture of SI Freetown, Sierra Leone members<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-79\" src=\"http:\/\/soroptimist-gbi.org\/manchester-conference\/files\/2010\/10\/05conf2010web-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Freetown\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The General Meeting <\/strong>after lunch was very well run, and took less time than planned in spite of the electronic voting pads failing!
