{"id":5154,"date":"2019-07-17T00:05:44","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T23:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/?p=5154"},"modified":"2020-06-08T13:42:14","modified_gmt":"2020-06-08T12:42:14","slug":"a-driving-force-in-domestic-abuse-safeguarding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/2019\/07\/17\/a-driving-force-in-domestic-abuse-safeguarding\/","title":{"rendered":"Driving change in safeguarding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From 2018 &#8211; July 2019 Soroptimist International of Lichfield and District worked in partnership with Staffordshire Police on the &#8220;Driving Change&#8221; project to provide 150 safeguarding packs for distribution to local driving instructors by their then Partnership Manager, SI Lichfield &amp; District Vice President, Marisha Place&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Driving Instructors spend an hour or two alone in a car with a person and hold a unique and important position within local communities. To someone suffering from abuse of any form, this engagement provides a safe environment where they are free from harm and are not accompanied by anyone who controls them. This is a brief period of escape from what could be an exceedingly difficult and dangerous home life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The driving instructor\u2019s car may be the only safe place they have where they are allowed to go without their abuser.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5157\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5157\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/files\/2020\/06\/Driving-Instructor-packs-pic-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5157 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/files\/2020\/06\/Driving-Instructor-packs-pic-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Driving Change&quot; Safeguarding Packs\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/files\/2020\/06\/Driving-Instructor-packs-pic-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/files\/2020\/06\/Driving-Instructor-packs-pic-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/files\/2020\/06\/Driving-Instructor-packs-pic-1.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Driving Change&#8221; Safeguarding Packs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The safeguarding pack provides driving instructors with the information to spot vital opportunities to intervene and potentially save the lives of people experiencing domestic abuse. There may be many reasons why they may not want to report what is happening to them to the police, but may feel more comfortable speaking to another agency, who can offer them valuable support and guidance. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The pack\u2019s contents include;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A pen with a helpline number<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trolley token on key ring with helpline number<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safe place sign<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Definitions of domestic abuse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spotting the signs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018Survival card\u2019 offering information on national and local charities and support services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Community information recording form<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staffordshire.police.uk\/advice\/advice-and-information\/daa\/domestic-abuse\/\">Staffordshire Police Partnership Manager<\/a> offered the packs and had a training conversation explaining the material and contacts, and the expectations of the instructors. The driving instructors were contacted via email, telephone and in person at the driving test centre. Marisha also reassured them that the expectations from them as to what they should do and what advice they should give when a disclosure was made by a pupil are NOTHING and NONE!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead the advice given to the driving instructors was not to try to manage the risk on their own but to telephone the police if there was an immediate safeguarding risk, where police could offer practical advice and support.
