{"id":5871,"date":"2021-12-02T09:19:20","date_gmt":"2021-12-02T08:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/?p=5871"},"modified":"2021-12-02T09:20:04","modified_gmt":"2021-12-02T08:20:04","slug":"modern-slavery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/2021\/12\/02\/modern-slavery\/","title":{"rendered":"Modern Slavery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Modern Slavery: Today is the United Nations International day for the abolition of slavery.\u00a0 This commemorates the date of the adoption by the General Assembly, of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others (resolution 317(IV) of 2 December 1949.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/files\/2021\/12\/forced-labour-cartoon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5874 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/files\/2021\/12\/forced-labour-cartoon-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Modern Slavery - forced child labour\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/files\/2021\/12\/forced-labour-cartoon-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/lichfield\/files\/2021\/12\/forced-labour-cartoon.jpg 717w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/slavery-abolition-day\">This day<\/a> reminds us of the continuing problem with modern slavery which encompasses slavery, human trafficking, forced labour and domestic servitude. Traffickers and slave masters use coercion, deceit and force to bring individuals into a life of abuse, servitude and inhumane treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Organised crime groups that operate in the UK with Human trafficking are of great concern in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the speakers from the Chase Midland Regional meeting on Saturday 27th November was Diane Yeadon from Voice of Hope who has been working with victims of slavery and trafficking and has seen first-hand the issues presenting survivors. Voice of Hope are offering training to anyone who would like to know more about this subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are no typical victims in slavery, they can be men, women and children but usually have vulnerability in common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spotting the Signs; Indicators of Modern Slavery \/ Trafficking include:-<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Signs of being controlled and dependent &#8211; for example, they may act as if they are instructed or coached by someone else and \/ or allow others to speak for them when spoken to directly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fearful of police \/ authorities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fearful of the trafficker and fearful for the lives of family members<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Signs of trauma including psychological and physical<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fearful of telling others about their situation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Limited social interaction or contact with people outside their immediate environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Living in dirty, cramped or overcrowded accommodation and \/ or living and working at the same address<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not paid, paid very little or someone else in control of their earnings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perception of being in debt to someone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No passport or someone else holding their passport \/ ID documents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Signs of being harmed or deprived of food, water, sleep, medical care or other life necessities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Children &#8211; alone, not related to adult carer, inappropriate clothing\/behaviour\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Very often victims are unaware they are being used in this way and groups such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voiceofhope.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Voice of Hope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salvationarmy.org.uk\/modern-slavery\/supporting-survivors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Salvation Army<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blackcountrywomensaid.co.uk\/services\/modern-slavery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Country Women\u2019s Aid Modern Slavery services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 are there to support survivors and help them understand what has happened to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have suspicions REPORT IT!
