Wales Anti-Slavery Conference<\/p>\n

Friday 23<\/span>rd <\/span>January 2015<\/span><\/p>\n

Venue Cymru, Llandudno<\/p>\n

The Wales Anti-Slavery Conference took place on January 23<\/span><\/span>rd <\/span><\/span>2015, with 220 delegates in attendance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The purpose of the conference was to inform leaders from public sector, voluntary organisations and NGOs<\/p>\n

of the current national and regional actions taking place to address modern slavery.<\/p>\n

The invited speakers were:-<\/p>\n

– Chair of the North Wales Anti-Slavery Project : Richard Parry Jones.<\/p>\n

– Deputy Police & Crime Commissioner, North Wales : Julian Sandham.<\/p>\n

– The UK Independent, Anti-Slavery Commissioner: Kevin Hyland.<\/p>\n

– Wales Anti-Slavery Co-ordinator : Stephen Chapman.<\/p>\n

– Operation Imperial \u2013 Gwent Police : Det. Supt. Paul Griffiths & Det. Insp. Lyndon Hawker.<\/p>\n

– Romanian guests : Aurora Martin and Andreea Gavrila<\/p>\n

– A survivor of Modern Slavery : Rachel<\/p>\n

– North Wales Anti-Slavery Co-ordinator : Jim Coy.<\/p>\n

–<\/p>\n

Delegates were invited to participate in two of the four focus group sessions, which were entitled :-<\/p>\n

– <\/span><\/span>A<\/span><\/span><\/i>: The Wales Survivor<\/span><\/span>\/<\/span><\/span><\/i>Victim Care Pathway (VCP) : Led by Angelina Rodrigues<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– B: Operation Sprint \u2013 An Investigation of Sexual Exploitation: Led by Det. Supt. Paul Withers & Det.<\/p>\n

Insp. Peter Danby, Lancashire Constabulary.<\/p>\n

– C: UK Human Trafficking Centre and NRM Review Operations Manager, National Crime Agency :<\/p>\n

Led by Vince Dean.<\/p>\n

– D: Anti-Slavery Training in Wales : Led by Kim Ann Williamson, CPS Wales; Kate Hood, Llamau;<\/p>\n

Becky Stone, New Pathways & DC Darren Johns, South Wales Police.<\/p>\n

The main objectives for the conference were:<\/p>\n

– <\/i><\/span><\/span>To provide an overview of the national strategies for addressing modern slavery, including the<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Modern Slavery Bill; changes to the National Referral Mechanism and the role of the UK<\/p>\n

Human Trafficking Centre under the National Crime Agency;<\/p>\n

– <\/i><\/span><\/span>To present an update on the progress being made and learning points from both the North<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wales and Wales Anti-Slavery Projects;<\/p>\n

– <\/i><\/span><\/span>To share about slavery and human trafficking issues and work being done from an<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

international perspective;<\/p>\n

– <\/i><\/span><\/span>To give an understanding of modern slavery from the victim\u2019s perspective;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/i><\/span><\/span>To present examples of recent police investigations, and the complexities of securing<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

convictions;<\/p>\n

– <\/i><\/span><\/span>To provide an update on the training that has been taking place throughout Wales and the<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

progress made in raising awareness of the issues.<\/p>\n

– <\/i><\/span><\/span>To look at the importance of multi-agency intelligence sharing;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/i><\/span><\/span>To provide key leaders and managers with the opportunity to consider the contribution their<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

departments or organisations can make to ensure the problem of modern slavery does not go<\/p>\n

unrecognised in Wales.<\/p>\n

Delegates were asked to give feedback as they left, and there were a great deal of positive comments, not<\/p>\n

only about the conference, but also about the future development, training opportunities and collaborative<\/p>\n

partnerships towards the work of Anti-Slavery in Wales.<\/p>\n
