{"id":4479,"date":"2020-03-25T20:53:23","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T20:53:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/london-anglia\/?page_id=4479"},"modified":"2022-05-24T11:10:34","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T11:10:34","slug":"programme-action-in-our-region","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/london-anglia\/programme-action-in-our-region\/","title":{"rendered":"What We Do: Programme Action in our region is alive and well!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In March, just prior to Lockdown, we held a Fundraising lunch at Wivenhoe House, Colchester &#8211; a great place for events.\u00a0 <\/strong>Each Club who participated provided items for a Silent Auction, Raffle Prizes (including toilet rolls which were like gold dust at the time!) and some had stalls selling jewellery.\u00a0 We raised \u00a3900 so divided between the participating Clubs we had some additional funds to help our charities during this very difficult time. The House has been under threat of closure and they have undertaken local efforts to prevent this by writing protests. The closure is at present on hold.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Toilet Twinning<\/strong> \u2013 they raised money (\u00a3400) for the local council to link public lavatories with a set somewhere in Africa, and are chasing the City Council to progress this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>SI Chelmsford have:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Worked with <strong>Anglian Ruskin<\/strong> cross-promoting a new initiative they have in place for online reporting of harassment,\u00a0bullying and sexual\u00a0violence among other unacceptable behaviours.<\/li>\n<li>And, carrying on various long-standing actions, members help to contribute materials for starter bags of toiletries, and moving-on bags\u00a0of household supplies, for women entering and leaving our local <strong>women&#8217;s refuge<\/strong>, and we continue to sponsor a girl&#8217;s education through the <strong>Rosie May Foundation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>SI Colchester have:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continues to support <strong>St Helena Hospice<\/strong> by providing Sunday reception cover.\u00a0 The Club was instrumental in the setting up of our local hospice and continues to provide support.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Actively support their local <strong>Women\u2019s Refuge<\/strong>.\u00a0 On a monthly basis purchase \u2018Starter Bags\u2019, an idea we learnt from our sisters in Chelmsford.\u00a0 These are much appreciated by the ladies moving onto the \u2018Next Chapter\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Held several fundraising events for <strong>Refugee Action<\/strong> and supported a lady refugee to achieve a level of English which will enable her to return to University and achieve the education she left behind.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colchester Youth Awards<\/strong> &#8211; Colchester Club sponsored an award.\u00a0 The CYA Diamond Writing Award was a great success.\u00a0 10 young people submitted entries and a judging panel of SI Colchester Soroptimists got it down to a shortlist of three finalists. All three finalists attended the ceremony.<\/li>\n<li>Continue to collect jewellery and other unwanted items with a recycling value. Recently, their efforts raised another \u00a3115 for our President\u2019s charities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>SI East London have:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People: providing English conversation sessions to volunteers of <strong>TheIdeasPartnership in Kosovo<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>People: researching and publishing the history of women in East London in partnership with the <strong>East End Womens Museum<\/strong> and other organisations<\/li>\n<li>People: given support to <strong>Beyond the Streets<\/strong>, an organisation helping women out of street prostitution<\/li>\n<li>People: Given support to <strong>Ella&#8217;s Home<\/strong>, a refuge for trafficked women<\/li>\n<li>Planet: twinning toilets in public locations throughout East London to improve access to healthy, safe sanitation and water around the world with <strong>Toilet Twinning<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Prosperity: nominating <strong>East London female entrepreneurs<\/strong> for awards.<\/li>\n<li>Prosperity: given support to <strong>female run social enterprises<\/strong> including SaPune in Kosovo and Juta shoes in London,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>SI Great Yarmouth have:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continued supporting <strong>2 local refuges<\/strong> &#8211; Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft<\/li>\n<li>Other donated items have been given to <strong>International Aid Trust.<\/strong> We are working in partnership with a local church to recycle\/reuse as much as possible.<\/li>\n<li>In partnership with the Library service we\u2019ve contributed a significant amount to the <strong>Red Box Project (sanitary products).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Taken part in 3 events for <b>International Women&#8217;s<\/b>\u00a0<strong>Day<\/strong> by engaging with <strong>students at a 6th Form College<\/strong> on careers, Soroptimism and issues of importance to the student;\u00a0 holding a free event in the library working with <strong>GYROS<\/strong> (Great Yarmouth Refugee and Outreach Support), community workers and library personnel; holding a Charity Lunch and auction with about one hundred guests raising c.\u00a31300. They also launched their <strong>Young Women\u2019s Leadership Award<\/strong> offered in partnership with Rotary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><em><strong>SI Ipswich have:<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Started an investigation into\u00a0<strong>Modern Day Slavery &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>how Suffolk Constabulary is set up to tackle this crime, how our local authorities from the County Council, District Councils, Borough Councils, Town &amp; Parish Councils cascade information down and work with our Police Authority.\u00a0 What do they do to increase awareness of the crime, how to identify a potential victim, how to report any suspicions and if training is given to all their staff on this issue.<\/li>\n<li>Made over 300 syringe driver bags for <strong>Ipswich Hospital<\/strong> for the use for cancer and end of life patients (both women and men).\u00a0 This is an ongoing project.<\/li>\n<li>Given an award of \u00a3250 from the <strong>Club\u2019s Education Bursary<\/strong> to a refugee woman to undertake a CACHE Level 3 Award in Childcare and Education.<\/li>\n<li>In recognition of <strong>UN Literacy Day<\/strong> members read the book \u2018The Shock of the Fall\u2019 by Nathan Filer about a young man with mental health issues (in support of SIGBI President Sue\u2019s theme \u2018Think on It\u2019.\u00a0 Books were borrowed from the Library and together members donated \u00a340 to the <strong>Regional Pelandaba<\/strong> Project in lieu.\u00a0 And subsequently their President did a fundraising lunch that raised over \u00a3100 for the same Project.<\/li>\n<li>For <strong>UN Day of the Girl Child and Mental Health Day<\/strong> members wrote to their MP (the Club covers approx 5 constituencies) about the slow referral and poor support given to young people with mental health problems<\/li>\n<li>Gave a special graduation prize of \u00a375 book token to an outstanding female student at the University of Suffolk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>SI Kings Lynn have:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Raised awareness of a number of issues and built partnerships with other local organisations.<\/li>\n<li>Hosted a flower bed in Tower Gardens for the <strong>Anglia in Bloom Competition.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Donated Christmas gifts and food stuffs in support of the <strong>homeless<\/strong> in the community.<\/li>\n<li>Hosted a stall at <strong>International Earth Day<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Collected <strong>sanitary products<\/strong> to donate to an initiative run by the local <strong>libraries<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Provided English lessons for <strong>migrant workers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>SI Norwich have:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collected gifts for Christmas, materials for handicrafts, offers of support in activities e.g. walks, therapy for <strong>4Women <\/strong>\u2013 women going through the probation system<\/li>\n<li>Supported<strong>\u00a0UNA<\/strong>\u2019s meetings with tea making and encouraging people to attend meetings.<\/li>\n<li>Fundraised for <strong>Opening Doors<\/strong> (A self help group for adults with disabilities ) for the third year with a Stall at a Christmas Fayre 3<sup>rd<\/sup> year of fundraising.<\/li>\n<li>Partnered with Waterstones <u>\u201c Christmas Tree of books<\/u>\u201d\u00a0 for six girls in the foster care\/ immigrant community nominated by Norfolk County Council.<\/li>\n<li>Involvement with\u00a0 <strong>NOPF<\/strong> (Norwich Older Peoples Forum ) e.g. providing one of the speakers for AGM<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>SI Southend have continued:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Raised money for its joint Presidents project which is <strong>Age Concern Southend<\/strong>, who are establishing a \u2018One Stop\u2019 hub; they hope to add a hairdressers, chiropodist, health and financial advocacy to the caf\u00e9 and club areas.
