– Soroptimist International Malta Against FoodWaste

October marks many important issues, one of which is FOOD WASTE. Soroptimist International Malta wishes to share some extracts from AD Unfold: How to feed a growing world.

These extracts are aimed in promoting win-win business in developing countries.

DEFINITION OF FOOD WASTE BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION (EC)
“raw or cooked food materials and includes food loss before, during or after meal preparation in the household, as well as food discarded in the process of manufacturing, distribution, retail and food service activities.”

According to FLASH EUROBAROMETER SURVEY:
– 47% Europeans understand the meaning of ‘best before’ labeling, while 40% are aware of the meaning of ‘use before’- Whilst highlighting the fact that clearer information is needed on the meaning of date marking, 2/3 of those surveyed mention that better food management at home is the main way of reducing food waste.- EC (The European Commission ) confirms the need of targeted information and educational initiatives.- European commissioner in charge of Health and Food Safety said that “ if we do nothing, food waste could rise to over 120 million tonnes by 2020. In Europe alone, it accounts for estimated annual losses of 200 billion to the European economy.”

Food waste is a commitment that needs to be taken seriously. Recognizing the important role, raising awareness, and working together to prevent food waste we will reach goals, saving money and lower the environmental footprint.
