The evening was a\u00a0great celebration of Soroptimism and a chance to meet old friends and make new ones, and to\u00a0welcome our friends and families.<\/p>\n<p>President Sue welcomed members from sixteen other clubs, including the Presidents of four of our\u00a0daughter clubs, Ashton-u-Lyne, Blackburn, Bolton and Stockport.<\/p>\n<p>Federation President Margaret Emsley kindly gave the response to the Toast to Soroptimist\u00a0International, which was proposed by Martin Smedley, CEO of the charity Act4Africa.\u00a0Sandie Taylor, President of SI South Lancashire, and Margaret Hammond, President of SI North West\u00a0England and the Isle of Man were also present, to mark the fact that we have daughter clubs in both\u00a0regions.<\/p>\n<p>The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Paul Murphy and the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Anita Murphy,\u00a0were our honoured guests, and the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Sharman Birtles, attended in\u00a0her capacity as a Soroptimist, as she is a member of SI Ashton-u-Lyne.<\/p>\n<p>We were entertained and enlightened by our guest speaker, Ann Garvie, Immediate Past President\u00a0of Soroptimist international.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/manchester\/files\/2016\/03\/DSCF3851.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-629\" src=\"\/manchester\/files\/2016\/03\/DSCF3851-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSCF3851\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/manchester\/files\/2016\/03\/DSCF3851-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/manchester\/files\/2016\/03\/DSCF3851.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were also pleased to welcome President Yemisi OpAneye and members of our mother club, SI\u00a0Greater London, and Presidents Sue and Yemisi together cut the celebration cake.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/manchester\/files\/2016\/03\/DSCF3837.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-632\" src=\"\/manchester\/files\/2016\/03\/DSCF3837-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSCF3837\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/manchester\/files\/2016\/03\/DSCF3837-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/manchester\/files\/2016\/03\/DSCF3837.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the evening President Sue had a surprise in store for Martin Smedley and the other\u00a0staff members of Act4Africa, when she announced the launch of our 90th Project. It is well known\u00a0that Soroptimists do not give up in the face of a setback, and, after our disappointment in Glasgow,\u00a0the club will be working with Act4Africa to deliver a HEAL Malawi project to change the lives of\u00a0women and girls living in extreme poverty in the Mchinji district.
