This year Mansfield Soroptimists will be raising funds for the local hospital, the Breast Unit at Kings Mill Hospital. After discussions with the specialist nurses, screening manager and Breast Care Consultant, they have come up with several ideas, which would make a difference to best care for their patients. This includes specialist equipment. At our first meeting we had the Specialist Nurse and Screening manager to talk, and we have also supported the unit at a Breast Cancer Care meeting in May
Many of the fundraising ideas are also social ones, so we have a craft fair and a quiz, planned for 2016, and this year, we are having a Summer tea at one of members home, a cruise down the River Trent in June, an afternoon tour of Thoresby Hall with a cream tea, and possibly a concert or race night planned for next year. Other ideas of fundraising, are 20pences in smartie tubes and quiz sheets.
The Mansfield Soroptimists are a vibrant group of dynamic women where through friendship and commitment we are able to focus on programme action. This is at the heart of the club, and our primary aim is to improve the lives and status of women through education, and empowerment, and always to increase access to education for women and girls.
We have several projects at the moment such as Tree aid, POW Nottingham, and also CAMFED. The club also helps with the Alzheimer’s cafes, at Mansfield and at Kirkby. The members provide drinks and refreshment for all who attend.
As well as fund raising, fun and friendship, we also try to find interesting speakers at our monthly meetings. We have had Tai Chi for the over 50s this month, and planned is POW from Nottingham, a Beetle drive, Flower demonstration, the work of the Nottinghamshire Fire Station, Citizens Advice Bureau and their work, Samaritans, Polar Bears and Queen Victoria !. Varied or what!. Also once a year we have a Charter and King Henry V111 will be attending.
Mansfield Soroptimists are also members of Midland East Region, where 3 to 4 times per year many soroptimists get together and have an amazing day of incredible, powerful speakers. One of these events is coming up in June, where speakers will be from De Montfort University discussing Women of the Future. Mansfield will be ‘hosting’ this meeting and 11 members will be going to Loughborough to help with this day. Also Internationally there is an conference in Istanbul, as well as a conference for the Soroptimists International of Great Britain and Ireland, this is planned for Glasgow in November and the speakers are very awe-inspiring.
