The theme \u2018to invest in people, prioritise education\u2019. In 2023, it is dedicated to Afghan women and girls. <!--more-->Education is a human right.\u00a0 It offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future.<\/p>\n<p>Hayley Heyes from Byron Primary School attended our January club meeting . <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/Hayley-Heyes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6045 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/Hayley-Heyes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/Hayley-Heyes.jpg 925w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/Hayley-Heyes-271x300.jpg 271w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 162px) 100vw, 162px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/BYRON-UNICEF-SOROPTIMIST-MEETING-January-2023.pdf\">Hayley spoke about being a Rights Respecting School.<\/a> They registered in 2016, and achieved Silver award in 2018.\u00a0 Unfortunately progress was halted during the pandemic but was relaunched in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Soroptimists have a partnership agreement with the school that includes: &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>participate in the Steering committee<\/li>\n<li>develop international links with schools<\/li>\n<li>support with activities that promote the ethos.<\/li>\n<li>send the school, a tweet or postcard from our travels<\/li>\n<li>share website links<\/li>\n<li>Provide ideas to help the community locally, nationally and internationally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Byron recognise the challenges pupils and families face. So a Social Change project has been set up. Actions taken include: &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make end of term tag day a food bank donation going towards families at our school in real need<\/li>\n<li>Distribute left over fruit and veg from KS1 to families in need<\/li>\n<li>Advertise in Newsletter food apps like Olio and Too Good To Go, plus show the latest offers for deals in local caf\u00e9 and restaurants<\/li>\n<li>Uniform donations to go to the Salvation Army.<\/li>\n<li>Host a come and take day at our school supported by the Salvation Army<\/li>\n<li>Coat Amnesty planned, donations going to the reuse and recycle shop in Nelson Road<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As Soroptimists we are proud and totally committed to working with Byron Primary School. We have updated our partnership agreement.\u00a0 This includes being involving in their Social Change project.<a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/Rocky-Rights-Respecting-Turtle-1-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6046 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/Rocky-Rights-Respecting-Turtle-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/Rocky-Rights-Respecting-Turtle-1-2.jpg 720w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/Rocky-Rights-Respecting-Turtle-1-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/medway-maidstone\/files\/2023\/01\/Rocky-Rights-Respecting-Turtle-1-2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pupils have designed a mascot for the school called Rocky the Rights Respecting turtle. It is a gender-neutral turtle to represent equal rights for all.\u00a0 Rocky will be a colourful edition to classrooms.
